Hanoi5
Teams, red vs white ♠A9876♥---♦A954♣T864 1♦-Pa-1♥-??? Is it an automatic Pass or 1♠?
Phil
I would overcall and don't think its particularly close.
nigel_k
With a void, I will always enter the auction if possible. Here we can do so easily.
daveharty
With spades and a void, I will always enter the auction if possible. Here we can do so easily.Amended your post. I'm a lot less certain with -- A9876 A954 T864 after the auction starts 1C-pass-1D to me; I've often wondered about hands like this.

phil_20686
Not only is this an overcall for me, its an absolutely routine overcall. I would regard passing as a major error.
ggwhiz
Not only is this an overcall for me, its an absolutely routine overcall. I would regard passing as a major error. Me too. I always try to protect against 3nt with pard on lead if I can. It may still be our hand in either black suit or by bumping them up.
whereagles
The hand is somewhat sucky, but given pard was unable to bid 1H over 1D, opps are likely to have a huge heart fit. To bid spades here is therefore quite important.
Statto
Interesting. No doubt the above posters have better experience and judgement than me, but... We're vul in the sandwich position and don't have a great suit or hand. 1♠ has absolutely no pre-emptive value. If LHO declares in ♦ I probably don't want a ♠ lead - a ♥ lead if found could work well. The bullets should be fine in defence, as is our hand in general. If anything I'd double because of the ♣ tolerance (in fact that's what I'd do), or try a mischievous 2♠. I think 1♠ may suggest to partner you have more than you do, so partner ends up miscompeting. MrAce
............................ If anything I'd double because of the ♣ tolerance (in fact that's what I'd do), or try a mischievous 2♠. I think 1♠ may suggest to partner you have more than you do, so partner ends up miscompeting. Why do you think overcalling 1♠ instead of DBL may suggest to partner we have more than we actually do ? If anything i would think the opposite. Statto
Why do you think overcalling 1♠ instead of DBL may suggest to partner we have more than we actually do ? If anything i would think the opposite.I think both suggest more than we have. So I'm probably going to shy away and pass in future bidding. And on that basis, I prefer double as it tells partner about 8 cards in my hand rather than 5.
Statto
Another reason I don't like 1♠ is we could end up playing in ♠ if partner gets averagely frisky. Forced in ♥ from the opening lead, probably doubled, on a misfitting hand to boot. Maybe I'm too pessimistic? B-)

Hanoi5
They got to 4♥ at both tables. Partner doubles if you overcall and doesn't if you don't. It went down 2 at both tables.
whereagles
1♠ has absolutely no pre-emptive value. That's not the point. This is probably your one and only shot at bidding the top suit, so you should take it.
P_Marlowe
1S. You have the spades, you bid them. With kind regardsMarlowe
