Playing in a club pairs event, you pick up a very nice hand in 3rd seat. Unfortunately partner pre-empts with 4 in front of you:

[hv=pc=n&s=sa74hak98643dkca3&d=n&v=n&b=5&a=4cp]133|200[/hv]

How do you proceed?

Is 4NT KC? If it is and I'm sure what the answers will be I'll try that. 6 also comes to mind, might save us from the possibility of them intervining somehow, but Vul and 1st seat partner could have A and KQ of clubs, I suppose so 7 is not out of the question.

6.....It's no certainty but....

my partner should have 8 Clubs and NO outside A or K.

If the 8 Clubs can come in after getting a -ruff in your short trump hand... then that's 12 tricks.

Best defense will be a Club lead.... but you still have a chance that the opp with the A doesn't have another trump.

Until whereagles pointed out that p could have KJ 8th and an ace I thought this was an easy 6 bid, maybe now I'll join the blackwood camp.

As well as the chance of taking a diamond ruff you will almost certainly have play to establish those hearts for your twelfth (and, if they don't take their ace of diamonds, potentially 13th) trick.

4D keycard in clubs

Failing that, 4NT I suppose if partner thinks it is keycard, but I prefer to play that as natural so I have to guess and bid 6C.

(I played 4NT as natural long before I played 4D as keycard, so this is a possible problem for me)

I agree that 4D must be better than 4NT as keycard. I can imagine grand here as well, so would not bid 6C. Cannot pard have x x Axx KJxxxxxx? I guess we have to play 4NT over a 4D opener as RKCB, as 4H and 4S are needed as natural, so I think it risks a forget to have a different KCB in each case, for me anyway.

A lead would probably devastate our chances of setting up the , and it seems most likely. If partner has pre-empted with an opening hand, I'll find another have words B-)

Those who chose to keycard (by whatever method) will be rewarded on this hand when they find partner with 2 keycards and the Q. The full hand was:

[hv=pc=n&s=sa74hak98643dkca3&w=skj95hj52dt865cj4&n=sthtdaj92ckqt9762&e=sq8632hq7dq743c85&d=n&v=n&b=5&a=4cp6cppp]399|300[/hv]

At the table I only bid 6, the possibility of partner having the A not crossing my mind. My partner made an overtrick for an almost top, one pair finding 6NT. 7 would have been a complete top.

I don't personally mind partner's 4 bid, despite being a bit top-heavy. It looks very likely indeed that the opponents have a major-suit fit, so it feels right to put maximum pressure on.
