  1. 1. what would the best rebid here?

1NT rebid is clear. I would never upgrade this hand to a 1NT opening, and while I frequently raise a 1 of a major response to 2 on three cards, this is not the right hand for it.

lets say U are playing 2/1 or sayc

[hv=pc=n&s=s75hjt8dakj7ckqt8&d=s&v=0&b=11&a=1d(4+)p1h(4+/%206+hcp)p]133|200[/hv]

I am normally very aggressive about raising to 2M on three card support.

I would rebid 1NT on this hand for the following reasons

1. I have a small doubleton in Spades. Showing a fit in hearts could very well invite a spade balance which is the last think I want to hear. On the other hand, suppressing a Heart fit might allow us to declare 1NT

2. I'm very close to a 1NT opening. I have enough strength that NT and Hearts could produce the same number of tricks

3. I'd much rather have KTx or so in Hearts for the raise

Gosh, I didn't think it was *that* bad. Why so awful?

To be honest, I never ever though of that :P

4-4 should never be treated as 2 suiter, there are exceptions as for everything, but they are in competition, never when opponents pass.

And towards this case: 1NT is a so good contract compared to 2m in general that when 1NT is a perfect option, thinking of 2m instead makes no sense. This is specially true at MPs.

I don´t mean this as a critic, but the notion of even thinking 2 is an option is really sick. IMO you 2 should both delete that thing forever from your head as quickly as possible.

I don't see anything sick about 2. In fact, if RHO had doubled or bid 1, that 2 would probably be a better bid because it would allow pard to compete if LHO bids spades.

That being said, I would bid 1NT because stoppers are below shape/strength in bidding priorities. I would seriously consider 2 if RHO had acted.

I have no problem raising with 3 card support. But,

I usually have 3 "good" trumps and a roughing value and if it's close a weakish 3rd suit.

This hand only meets 1 of my criteria for a 3 card raise, so its a pretty clear 1NT rebid

1NT = 10

2 = 6

2 = 2

Yes. For the reasons given, and also to avoid this rebid question :)

Art - what sort of 14 count would you upgrade to 1NT? Any? 5 card suit mandatory? Just curious ...

Yes, a 5 card suit would be mandatory before I would open a 14 count with a 15-17 1NT. But, even then, I would need a compelling reason.

I usually don't count an extra point for my doubleton when opening 1NT. :)

Thanks Art.

I am still curious what would constitute a "compelling reason" - can you give a couple of example hands?

And of course I didn't add for the doubleton. I added for the excellent concentrated honor values and spots. All this seems like it should be worth 1 point despite the lack of a long suit.

For what it's worth, the K&R evaluator gives this hand a 14.95.
