Fun Hand?

Recommended Posts

If you used a mini splinter or Bergen 3D two passes of 4S will come back at you. Are we forced?

What now?

Total tricks is at least 19, probably 20, maybe more, so 5 seems clear. Not sure we're forced after a mini splinter, but can't imagine often wanting to pass in this situation.

I originally liked Bergen followed by a raise but admitted to a 4 bid in f2f to avoid any hesitation issues.

I'm not going to make a slam try, just give pard the room for them to make one.

O.K. if you did the 3D Bergen thing, is Pard's vulnerable pass a possible slam try (pass and pull?)? Does she have to double with all normals? She had room for five-level cues and Wood.

Coming late to this hand.

We have a toy - 2NT = spade invitational splinter or better. I would try that.

In answer to the last question:

After a limit raise I don't think a forcing pass should be established. Especially if your limit raise can be this short of high cards.

1H - 2S! ( Zel's splinter "toy" -- mini-splinter option ) *

As Don writes I have a gadget that can show a mini-splinter raise. In isolation, this would allow us to find the right contract more often than not. However, we are not bidding in isolation and the opponents get to have a turn so I do not think this is the right hand to use it on and would prefer 4. There are a number of issues I see with making a mini-splinter:-

1. It makes it more likely that the opps will find spades when it is right.

2. It misleads partner as to my heart length which might prevent our bidding 5 when it is right.

3. It misleads partner as to my defensive values.

4. If the opps end up playing the hand in spades (quite probable) it is likely to kill any trump winner partner holds.

Against that 2S would gain when:-

1. We get to play 3 and this is right.

2. Partner is strong with no spade wastage and we can bid and make 6.

Since I prefer to play a 1 opening as limited to 17 number 2 on this list would be less likely for me. Even without this the first list is more important than the second so 4 has to be the percentage call. I would assume it did not work on this hand or it would not have been posted.

So, pard was going high with a 3 splinter showing about 13-16 support points...borrowed a few, but oh well.

1H (P) 3S (4S)

4N (5S ?.....She decided Answering DOP1 was for wimps, bid 6H and hoped for some good fortune.

I held X A6XXX AKX AQXX, and amidst a whole field of +200's our result was unique. Were we lucky and reasonable, just plain lucky, or something else?
