Opening bid

The 7-4 shape, the intermediates, the fact the void is in spades. 4H is clear, especially at MPs.

Preempting is not just a thing of rules and stuff. It's judgement, i.e. thinking what your side might have and what opps might have, in this case 4H for us our 4S for them.

Or maybe 4S doubled... :)

I was wondering about that last bit - using 4 to goad them into 4 where I have an ace and partner has a trump stack. Maybe we can pull a plus score out of thin air ...

If you open 1H, perhaps it goes

1H - (1S) - 2D - (2S)

3H - (3S) - Dbl - all pass

+200.

If you open 4H the opponents bid 4S and partner doubles. +500.

Just as possible that you open 4 and go for 800 with nothing on for opponents.

Not all opponents accept the transfer to 4 lightheartedly, particularly if they have been burnt before.

I am not claiming I know what to do with this hand, I think it is close between 1 and 4.

I would certainly not preempt if the majors were reversed.

I think it is less likely, with a huge majority of the expert world playing takeout doubles it is hard for them to double you off in 4H when you have a spade void. Even if they don't overcall 4S, if they double their partner will often have a 4S bid given our spade void.

Agree with you/everyone about not doing it with the majors reversed, the whole point of it here is the spade void obviously.
