What do you bid

Why is this hand being posted? Vul against not and partner a passed hand, the ONLY thing I could hope for is partner passed with a good 11-12 and we find 3NT. BUT saying that, it is highly unlikely and I am begging to go for some minus, perhaps doubled vs some part score.

I was North playing with my wife and the only one out of 25 Tables defending 1NT, loosing 10 IMPs in an admittedly weak field. (Our defense could have been better saving an IMP or two)

2 Tables opened the South hand with 2 showing a twosuiter preempt. Two West passed originally.

Almost everybody else acted over 1. (one doubled, the rest bid 1NT)

4 was popular, a few times doubled and usually making 11 tricks. (Without a diamond lead you have 12 tricks). 2 sacrificed in 5 for 500

As North I started to wonder whether my Bridge judgment was impaired.

I would overcall 1NT but it's borderline. Without so much controls I probably wouldn't overcall 1NT because my partner already passed.

If I decided to pass initially, then I wouldn't act over my opponent's 1NT.

Obviously it's a bit unlucky that partner has such nice shape and values, and that opener didn't rebid his 2nd suit...

I think North should bid 1NT on the first round. Not very risky in relation, for example, to my weak NT opening world, in fact a bit safer I'd say.

Obviously turns out a really good idea with the actual hand. Also a good idea if you move the Ace of clubs to the left. I see the risk of oppos doubling, oppos finding a big fit...They say it is a bidder's game.

It comes as little surprise that many N would act immediately.

When making the decision to pass I would be concerned that I was not making the "field" call, perhaps it is wrong to pass initially since it may be our last best chance to get the hand off our chest.

Maybe 1 for the sim guys.

1n over 1s

it seems totally natural your hand has actually gotten better with

the spade bid to your right. There is indeed valid reason to fear

getting slaughtered because it will happen sometimes. The same fear

can be applied to virtually any 1 level opening bid.

There is no special reason to assume we will get slaughtered here.

p as a passed hand can easily have enough for us to make a game

and even if not playing in a partial might not be so bad since we

can almost play it double dummy. W/o the 1s bid we would bid 1n

w/o even thinking about it p as a passed hand or not. Why would

we even consider not making the same call when the bid to our right

makes our hand better????????????

The fact that p did not open is not a huge shock since p would need

close to 100% of the remaining hcp to open. That is just as anti %

as assuming lho will have the remaining hcp. So the main argument

here seems to be that lho is favored to have about 1 1/2 more hcp

per hand and that is not enough to consider altering my normal

bidding.

If one of the opps ask you what 1n means answer strong and balanced

be afraid very afraid:))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

1NT - but our 1NT overcalls are light.

If I passed the first time, I will pass the 2nd time, due to a lack of bid.

Whatever X showes, T/O or penalty, take your pick, it would be T/O for us

- I dont have it.

As West, I would have bid 2D, I am 5-5, passing 1NT would never crossed my

mind. And over 2D South has a bid.

With kind regards

Marlowe
