JLOGIC
Pass then pass. With AJTx of spades or something I'd rip 1N I guess, but AJ63 is pretty meh. Ripping also allows the 1N bidder to run to 2 of something if he has a long suit. I think bidding over 1S is absurd.
Hanoi5
Partner having passed there's not much hope. If I enter I'd enter right away with 1NT.
Onedown
Why is this hand being posted? Vul against not and partner a passed hand, the ONLY thing I could hope for is partner passed with a good 11-12 and we find 3NT. BUT saying that, it is highly unlikely and I am begging to go for some minus, perhaps doubled vs some part score. PASS AND I SECOND THE EMOTION!
Yu18772
I am tempted to overcall 1NT the first time, but after overcoming that temptation I will pass the 2nd time without a problem. (Our defense could have been better saving an IMP or two)2 Tables opened the South hand with 2♥ showing a twosuiter preempt. Two West passed originally.Almost everybody else acted over 1♠. (one doubled, the rest bid 1NT) 4♥ was popular, a few times doubled and usually making 11 tricks. (Without a diamond lead you have 12 tricks). 2 sacrificed in 5♦ for 500 As North I started to wonder whether my Bridge judgment was impaired. gnasher
I think South should have bid over 1NT. You were unlucky that opener decided to pass 1NT - afterpass 1♠ pass 1NTpass 2♦ pass passyour partner would, I assume, have acted, though it might be hard to get to game. Cyberyeti
I would playing in partnerships other than my main one have overcalled 1N over 1♠. In my main partnership, I have no need as S would have opened on any hand where game is likely to be good like this one.
Free
I would overcall 1NT but it's borderline. Without so much controls I probably wouldn't overcall 1NT because my partner already passed. If I decided to pass initially, then I wouldn't act over my opponent's 1NT. Obviously it's a bit unlucky that partner has such nice shape and values, and that opener didn't rebid his 2nd suit...
AlexJonson
I think North should bid 1NT on the first round. Not very risky in relation, for example, to my weak NT opening world, in fact a bit safer I'd say. Obviously turns out a really good idea with the actual hand. Also a good idea if you move the Ace of clubs to the left. I see the risk of oppos doubling, oppos finding a big fit...They say it is a bidder's game.
Yu18772
I would act over 1NT with South hand, especially given the initial pass, but its not clear cut and many people would pass. What I completely dont understand is West pass.http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

Rainer Herrmann It comes as little surprise that many N would act immediately. When making the decision to pass I would be concerned that I was not making the "field" call, perhaps it is wrong to pass initially since it may be our last best chance to get the hand off our chest.Maybe 1 for the sim guys.
gszes
1n over 1s it seems totally natural your hand has actually gotten better withthe spade bid to your right. There is indeed valid reason to feargetting slaughtered because it will happen sometimes. The same fear can be applied to virtually any 1 level opening bid. There is no special reason to assume we will get slaughtered here.p as a passed hand can easily have enough for us to make a gameand even if not playing in a partial might not be so bad since wecan almost play it double dummy. W/o the 1s bid we would bid 1n w/o even thinking about it p as a passed hand or not. Why wouldwe even consider not making the same call when the bid to our rightmakes our hand better???????????? The fact that p did not open is not a huge shock since p would needclose to 100% of the remaining hcp to open. That is just as anti %as assuming lho will have the remaining hcp. So the main argumenthere seems to be that lho is favored to have about 1 1/2 more hcpper hand and that is not enough to consider altering my normal bidding. If one of the opps ask you what 1n means answer strong and balancedbe afraid very afraid:))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

P_Marlowe
1NT - but our 1NT overcalls are light. If I passed the first time, I will pass the 2nd time, due to a lack of bid.Whatever X showes, T/O or penalty, take your pick, it would be T/O for us- I dont have it. As West, I would have bid 2D, I am 5-5, passing 1NT would never crossed mymind. And over 2D South has a bid. With kind regardsMarlowe

dake50
What were South's passed hand distributional calls?2-suiter H+D, H+C, C+D seems wanted. And of course 1-suited with shape.Which begin with a double by passed hand?Eg. Dbl: H1. 2C: C+H. 2D: H+D.2NT: D+C.Let minor 1-suiter steam with 9-11.Even 2S(Q-bid by a passed hand): 6xC or 6xD. whereagles
I would overcall 1NT opposite tame opps, but pass against trigger-happy ones.
