Partner's overcall was rather skimpy, but even if you give partner another high card game is poor. As it was, 4♠ would have been horrible, but opener decided to bid over it. "Trust your vulnerable opponents" doesn't work that well when they don't know what they're doing. He feels the need to show partner his heart support.If you had bid something else and competed with 4♠ over 4♥, North can now double for penalties. Given that North had shown South his heart fit.
