You reach 4♠ without any interference and with South as declarer. Plan the play after West leads the 8♦. In situations like these I am never sure whether to start cross-ruffing, draw trump or do a bit of both. What is the line of play here with the highest probability of success do you think?
Phil
[hv=pc=n&s=sk752ht3dqcak9752&n=st986ha9762dakjtc]133|200|[/hv] North deals. In situations like these I am never sure whether to start cross-ruffing, draw trump or do a bit of both. What is the line of play here with the highest probability of success do you think? This is a good example of a hand that overlaps several genres. It's not really clear what the best line is, and starting from general principles seems right, reserving the right to change tack as the hand develops. While I would want to know if they lead a high card from 8xx or 8xxx, I would not expect that to be standard. Knowing how many trump tricks we can take is dependent on how many diamonds we are able to cash. Anyway, I would win the diamond in hand, and try two high clubs, ruffing the third. Assuming this lives, I would cash a 2nd diamond pitching a heart and cash the ♥A and ruff a heart. At this point, If everything works OK, I have 7 tricks in. All I need to do is score three more. I'd try a 4th club and if RHO follows, ruff. The worst thing that I think can happen is they overruff and return a trump. This is far from fatal, because if they draw trump my hand is high. If they play a diamond or a heart, ruff with a middle trump and try to score three more tricks via a high cross ruff.
gnasher
The original poster is from England, which is good news because it probably means the lead could be from 98x or 98xx.
whereagles
You could try also a dbl finesse in trumps. If this works, you're home on 2 spades, 4 diamonds, 2 clubs, 1 heart + 1 ruff.

Unfortunately this was an online game, and so the lead could ostensibly be from anything. However, I'll tell you for free that is was from 8xx.
