Something to try

Try Explore Bridge!, Bridge Library, Vugraph Archive.

Then click on the first link ("all recent...").

You will be taken to a web page with some links on it. Try clicking on one of the links for the recent Lederer tournament and, when asked, choose to Open the file (don't worry - no viruses possible in .lin files).

After the file downloads a scoreboard for the segment will appear. Click on one of the Open Room boards that has a result for it.

The board will appear. You can use the right arrow key on your keyboard (or the "next page" button on the toolbar) to advance the bridge movie.

These files are now generated automatically and will be provided for all vugraph shows that appear on BBO. The facility still needs some work, but I think it has a lot of potential.

Various people have posted complaints on rec.games.bridge over the years concerning BBO's lack of an automated vugraph archiving facility. If someone feels like making a post to that newsgroup (something I try to avoid these days) concerning the new facility, I would greatly appreciate it. Feel free to make posts in the forums areas of other online bridge sites as well (just kidding). Make sure to mention that you need to download and install the free BBO software if you want to open these free files. Using the word "free" a lot is good :D

Hi Fred,

this is a very nice feature. Congratulations. Maybe this is the wrong post to bring it up in, but it has long been a pet peeve of mine that clicking a link in BBO does not open up a new window. Thus when I am browsing whilst using BBO, and am sent a link, it means losing to page that I am currently reading. :D

Hi Fred!

Obviously, I am very much pleased hearing the good news!

I tried the new lin files; it takes some time to get used to the

coexistence of commentary but it works better than I

imagined. All in all, I find it a plus.

Again, congratulations and have a good time

in Istanbul!

Great Work, Fred & Uday. I love this. If it is going to be an automatic archival of all Vugraph's with embedded commentary in future, this will a great resource.

I expect this will restrain the commentators from loose talk and silly jokes, if they know that their comments are now being recorded for posterity. And thats good for people who browse these hand records offline later as the embedded commentary will predominantly be meaningful bridge stuff.

I am presuming offcourse that these archives are unedited versions.

I just opened lederer 16 oct 12:22 file on the archive

I can only get the open rooms deals to open

The closed room states "Deal record not found"

They are only recording in the open room at the Lederer, so no details exist for the closed room save for the result.

Hi Dean,

you can avoid this problem by using Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/). This browser always opens a new window when invoked by an application. And this is only one of the advantages. I use Firefox only since some weeks.

The polish (I think it was) matches from like 3AM EDT Sunday (and th others before the match from england started) did not show up in the vugraph directory. Was this intentional? A bug? The vugraph guys using older version of the software? I was so zombified from staying up all night I dreamed there was a polish vugraph thing going on?

The unedited page stores everything, including garbage from test matches, etc. I try to clean it up. Of course, i should be moving it to the BBO Vugraph Archive inside BBO instead, and i will, every now and again.

So this might explain why some files were there , then gone (they were files w/no data)

Some comments now that the features are up and running at the Olympiad

1. I can't access the new Results feature when I am kibbitzing a match - I have to leave the match and return to Vugraph theatre; is this the way it's supposed to work?

2. In standings I can only see the current round - it would be nice to be able to access earlier rounds and (more important) the latest positions on overall group standings - this will be more important as we get to the later stages of the event.

3. In Matches also, I can only access the current round and many matches are missing. Again I would like to be able to access matches from previous rounds - hopefully all matches

4. It would be great if we could save the match results to hard disk

5. The new features are a great step forward - however I think they fall well short of the RAMA results service which we got at the European Team Championships at Malmo - for me that is the sort of results service that BBO should strive to attain for these major WBF competitions.

I totally agree with Denis, especially the last paragraph.

And the problem is compounded because the organizers

don't seem able to provide a minimum of documentary

service.

Moreover, perhaps the WBF has staffing problems, but the level of documentary service it offers is far behind what was offered in Maastricht four years

ago. For instance, I see that Luxembourg beat China. Who played? There

is no way to get this info. On a much more elementary note,

in the official page of the tournament (which is very far behind the

standard achieved at Maastricht) the results are posted after a

delay of a couple of hours.

After 9 days and 18 replies Fred's request seems to have been forgotten : I didn't read any post in rec.games.bridge which satisfy it.

My English is not fluent enough to post one but I hope someone would like to write one.

Errr...

I posted the news at r.g.b. with the title

"Automatic logging of BBO Vugraphs!"

on October 17. There were two replies,

one to comment that the link on BBO

website (as contained in Fred's initial

message) was broken.

Nikos

I am sorry, Nikos, I didn't check carefully enough.
