Matchpoints, nobody vulnerable. RHO deals and passes.

This hand came up last week in the local club game and my LHO, who held this hand, seemed completely flummoxed. I told her I would create a poll, so here you go.

I'll risk a pass (assuming I have some way to show a two suiter later in the auction). It's just too easy seeing partner take us too high on a misfit (or even on a fitting hand!). Obviously, if I had a way to show a weak hand with both majors, I'd use that.

Two boss suits. I hope to make a two-suited bid next. If I open, P will expect more defensive value, which could lead to a 'misjudgement' in the later bidding. Can Ekrens handle this hand?

Wow, with 3 weak 2s (i.e. no two suited opener), I'd open it 1S. However both my regular partnerships have a two suited opening (one is 4/4 in the majors and one is 5/5 in the majors) so I'd try those. A bit of a lie for the Ekrens 2D, but I think partner would forgive me for pretending this was a 5/5 max.

Pretending it is a maximum. This looks super maximum to me.

I would open 1. And bid strongly after that :)

I wouldn't :)

Hm, the thread title on which I imagine most people based their vote said "first seat".

LOL yeah I saw that after posting, I meant to title it second seat of course. Since nobody had brought it up I have no idea if it would affect anyone's vote.

I voted `toy', as I have a 3 opening that covers weak, 5+5+ majors, and I'm not likely to lose much by using it.

Without that, 1/1 according to style in limited opening system, pass in 11-20 system.

Blue Team Club used an opening 2NT bid to show 5♥+5♠ with 8-12 HCP. I found it on Dan's website http://www.bridgewithdan.com/systems/ The continuation bidding allowed you to describe 6-5 or 5-6 holdings in the majors. BTC’s continuation bidding structure could easily accommodate showing a 6-6 holding in the majors as well e.g . After 2NT-3♣ (game force relay) opener can jump direct to 4♥ to show 6-6 in the majors.

The BTC continuation bidding structure is actually very effective. Some time ago I set up a "Teaching Table" and ran through quite a few random hands to test the effectiveness of the continuation bidding of BTC. Sure you get hands playing in a 5-2 fit at the 3-level but the results were seldom bad.
