A difficult misfit.

Playing in a team match in a local league, the following deal caused a lot of problems in the bidding:

[hv=pc=n&s=shakt52djt8ckq853&n=sak9742hj7dakq9c2&d=e&v=b&b=10&a=p1hp1sp2cp2dp3cp3sppp]266|200[/hv]

At our table the bidding was as shown, and I managed to take 10 tricks. The contracts at the other tables were 4-1, 3NT+2 and 6-1.

How would you bid these hands?

Why did south pass a forcing bid?

South has an easy 3nt bid over 3s, easy.

1. Its a useful agreement if 4th suit is forcing to game

2. Even if 4th suit is not forcing to game your partnership needs to know which auctions are forcing and which are passable - clearly there was a disagreement here

3. The auction looks fine up to 3 although 3NT is a possible alternative to 3

4. South can bid 3NT over 3 having a tough bid doesn't mean you should pass. South is better than minimum and should be reasonably happy bidding 3NT. Yes JTx isn't the typical sound stopper but partner knows you are not going to have great diamonds when you have shown at least 10 cards in two other suits.

We actually did have the agreement that 2 was forcing to game. Unfortunately partner forgot, and he wanted to stop before we got too high, because of the clear misfit. If he had bid 3NT, I would have raised to 4.

Agree I would bid the same as you have, S bids 3nt and North invites with 4nt. South should then Pass.

responder bid 3nt expecting opener to be 12-14, opener overide with 4H showing 2/5 A and 18-22 (forcing up to 4Nt), responder will make a move for 6D (4S) but opener will consider his hand a minimum with a K of S wasted and we will probably play 5D.

Interestingly enough, 6 makes double dummy, as does 6NT by North.
