FYI dble then spades shows a strong flexible hand as per usual. Bonus question - i fyou bid 3N what system do you play fro responder assuming west passes? Fluffy
I´d bid 3♠. When I bid 3NT I use 4♣ stayman and transfers, 4♣->4♦->4M is a proposition with 5 card suit.
JLOGIC
3S? Come on fluffy! You have 19 points
Fluffy
3S? Come on fluffy! You have 19 pointsYeah, a maximum overcall!
JLOGIC
I am probably thinking whatever you'd say to someone who overcalled 3S with 22 and said "a maximum!"
S2000magic
What is the plan here?I'd bid 3NT, and cross my fingers. Bonus question - if you bid 3N what system do you play for responder assuming west passes?Having no regular partner, I have no regular system over 3NT. Can you make a recommendation?
jallerton
It has to be a direct 3NT overcall here. How often do you have a double stop in their suit? Playing in spades, we shan't be making any extra tricks from ruffing diamonds in dummy. If you double then bid 3♠ over 3♥ the chance of partner being able to bid 3NT is not much more than 0%. Double then bid 3NT over 3♥ is an improvement, but partner will pull too often as she'll be under the impression that you hold at most a single stop (I might bid this way with something like ♦Qx or singleton ♦K). Over the 3NT overcall, I prefer to play: 4♣ Enquiry, asking about hand type4♦ Flint: sign off in game somewhere4♥/4♠/5♣: Natural, constructive In my view, Flint is superior to transfers here as if you play the latter, the 3NT overcaller has to guess whether or not to break the transfer on a reasonable hand. In theory, the responses to the 4♣ enquiry should be different over each 3-level opener, but to keep things simple, we bid 4NT with a minimum balancedish hand, cue with a good balancedish hand or bid a new suit with a source of tricks there.
Ant590
3NT. In response I play4♣ = asking (SLAP)4♦ = transfer to the cheapest unbid major (in this case hearts)4♥ = transfer to the next unbid suit up (spades)4♠ = transfer to the remaining suit SLAP (4♦ single running suit with stopper, 4♥lousy min balanced hand, 4♠ "all" monster hands, 4NT "points" ie balanced hands between 4♥ and 4♠)
whereagles
My plan is to bid and play 3NT.
Cascade
3NT. Over 3NT we play four suit transfers. A transfer into their suit is Stayman. These are to get out to 4Major with a (very) long suit and perhaps more importantly to be able to show a five-card suit and invite slam. Aside reminded of by Fluffy's 3♠ overcall and Justin's comment. I was once defending a spade contract with declarer having done a lot of bidding starting at 1♠ opening and dummy having done none or very little bidding. At the end of the hand dummy asked declarer "Did you have a 25 count?" Declarer got his cards back out of the board looked through them and said "Yes". Dummy said "I am going to sit up when you open 2♣". I guess we stand to attention when Fluffy doubles and bids a suit.

gszes
sorry about late response (dont know why i didnt see this one) 3n 3s deserves around a 1 because it is right ONLY when we make 3sand practically nothing else. 3s also gives p the impressionwe are probably unbalanced (not very true) or dont have the values and/or stoppers needed to bid 3n (completely untrue).A huge downside of 3s is that it can be bid on significantly less power than we have making further bidding difficult.Even worse p might make the assumption we actually have something resembling a decent spade suit. follow up 4c both majors 4d transfer (h)4h transfer (s)4s transfer (to other minor)4n quantitative assuming we have 20 hcp for our 3n bid
Zelandakh
3n follow up 4c both majors 4d transfer (h)4h transfer (s)4s transfer (to other minor)4n quantitative assuming we have 20 hcp for our 3n bidWhy not reverse the meanings of 4S and 4NT here? This allows you to bundle Baron into 4S. The only thing you appear to lose is a Last Train slam try when opps' minor is diamonds.
