luke warm
hey... is the following GCC legal? it's known as a 'herbert relay'... in all of these, opener's bid shows the suit named and another, at least 9 cards between the two... 1d : 1h or1h : 1s or1s : 2c where responder's bid shows 0-10 and is a relay that asks for opener's 2nd suit.. so the question is, is the relay gcc legal.. thx
paulg
*Allowed*Responses and Rebids 3. CONVENTIONAL RESPONSES WHICH GUARANTEE GAME FORCING OR BETTER VALUES. May NOT be part of a relay system.I would suggest that the above part of the GCC Chart (PDF) implies that conventional responses that do not guarantee game forcing or better values are not permitted. So luckily I do not have to address the issue of whether this is a relay system :) However I am not an ACBL Director. p
luke warm
ok thx... i don't quite understand why this 1nt : 2d2h : all pass and 1nt : 2c2s : all pass is any different from 1d : 1h1s, 1nt, 2c or 2d : pass but evidently it is
jtfanclub
ok thx... i don't quite understand why this (...)is any different from this (...)but evidently it is There isn't any real difference- GCC has certain defined relays that are allowed, and delayed relays are allowed (relays started after the first round of bidding), but no other immediate relays. Note that this IS legal:1C/1D/1H/1S showing a two suited hand including the suit bid, and 1NT forcing showing 0-10 asking for the second suit. This is because there's a special exception for 1NT responses- you couldn't use 2C instead.
luke warm
interesting... interesting and it doesn't make a lot of sense... is there a difference between a relay and an xfer? if so i'll just rename herbert relay to herbert transfer :D

This is because there's a special exception for 1NT responses- you couldn't use 2C instead. My reading of the GCC chart is that this 1NT response is only permitted after a major suit opening. All calls (systems) are permitted after a natural notrump opener (as opposed to specifically transfers). Although irrelevant at GCC, most authorities are more tolerant of bids that guarantee length in a suit (such as a transfer) than they are of relays. p
luke warm
ok... well that really sux :) ... asking bids are illegal under gcc except in those instances when they aren't, which makes perfect sense in a 1984ish way
