jillybean
We are into the semi's in our second match (despite me doubling making game contracts :( :o ) and have this handto review. Partner opens 1♦, you hold x,KQJ87,T6,KJ986 1♦:1♥2♦:? What is your bid?
Cascade
3♦ we have a fit and I want to invite game. Although more interested in hearts than notrumps or diamonds.
Mbodell
3♦, we'll raise 3♥ to game, bid 3nt over 3♠, pass 3nt, and be ok if partner passes 3♦.

jillybean
This was the auction at our table. [hv=pc=n&s=s5hkqj87dt6ckj986&n=sq64h5dakq843ca52&d=n&v=0&b=1&a=1dp1hp2dp3cp3sp4dp5dppp]266|200[/hv] My partner says 3♣ is game forcing but we should be able to stop in 4m with no fit. I say 3♣ is unconditionaly game forcing, we don't have the special agreements to allow us to stop below game once 3♣ is bid. We know some experienced partnerships allow the auction to die in 4m with no fit after an otherwise gf sequence but haven't discussed this in detail. In this auction I assume responder would have to jump to 5♦ or 4♥ if she wanted to force game and 4♦ was nf? And we need well refined hand analysis skills to do this. The good news is that we made 5♦ :P , the bad news, our t/m let them make 3N at their table.
Fluffy
3♣ is GF, only time to stop in 4m in undisrupted auction is when both hands are limited, for example 1♦-1♥-2♦-3♦-3♠-4♦-pass is possible. But when one hand is unlimited then it must be forcing. This is at least how I play and how I think everyone should play, some partnerships might agree to be able to end up in 4m, but IMO even if marginally better (I doubt it), overcomplicates things. TWO4BRIDGE
The problem is the 3♣ rebid by Responder.... not that it is a bad bid, but it takes up too much space when you essentially want to know if opener has 3 cards ♥. When opener does not have 3 cards ♥, s/he is left with fewer options for a rebid. If Responder uses "cheapest new suit forcing, artificial" ( EDIT addition: 2♠ ), then Opener here could rebid 2NT = showing a stop ( or partial stop ) in the other Major. He was reluctant to rebid 3NT over 3♣, although I suspect that the other table did not show such reluctance.... and hoped his ♦ would run . And if Opener did not have a ♠-stop, there is still room to show a 4 card ♣ suit at the 3-level. The final option for "none of the above" for Opener is a 3♦ rebid. neilkaz
In line with Don's response, what would you use 2♠ for in this sequence?

Granted jump rebids in minors are pretty wide ranging. In any case agree that 3c here would be gf and prefer 3d rebid by south over 2d. Dont think south is near a gf over 2d. Cascade
fwiw prefer north jump rebid to 3d with this one. Its close but I don't mind 2♦ that much with the stiff heart. Obviously ♦ AKQxxx and ♣ A are good and you could miss a game opposite not that much but quick tricks e.g. both major suit aces and two or three small diamonds. Against that there are a bunch of maximums with softer cards where you do not have nine quick tricks - even if the diamonds run.
