  1. 1. What would you bid in Auction 1

  2. 2. What would you bid in Auction 2

I found this hand in a magazine article aimed at beginners. The trouble is that I did not really agree with the answers, which are really meant to be clear-cut. For the purposes of this poll please assume you are playing a standard (5 card majors, strong NT, better minor) system where 2/1 responses are not game-forcing.

You are West and hold:-

KJT

2

K765

AQ984

Auction 1

=========

You are dealer and open 1C. Partner responds 1S with opps silent:-

1 - 1

?

Auction 2

=========

Your partner is dealer and opens 1D. After a 1H overcall on your right you respond 2C and your partner rebids 2D. Now back to you with nothing else from the opps:-

1 - (1) - 2

2 - ?

Note that if I get a unanimous poll that agrees with the magazine I will feel very silly!

2 is clear on board 1.

In an article aimed at beginners, I don't think that 3 on the second one is so clear. I chose 2 just to establish the game force with the intention of raising diamonds. In thinking about it more, I like the splinter bid, but I don't know that a beginner's article is the right place for it.

I would open hand 1 1.

That is really kinky.

If "kinky" means PREPARED in proper English, then I agree. Not a fan of rebidding 1N with a singleton if pard responded 1H, nor of rebidding 2C with that hand. If someone with a gun forced me to open 1C, I would rebid a really kinky 1S/1H and explain it was because I forgot to open 1D.

This time we got relatively lucky and can raise 1S to 2S.

On the second one, I doubt the beginner Mag. would presume splinters were in the bag of tricks for this auction, and might try the pattern 2S before supporting diamonds. 2H would be o.k. if we knew how high the bid committed the partnership. Not sure it would be a good idea when 2D might have been a stretch and 2H would force game.

I must know, what did the magazine suggest?

In auction 1 the recommendation was 2; in auction 2 2. I felt quite strongly that the best bids were 2 and 3 respectively. This was part of a series of 5 auctions with the same hand - I agreed with the other 3 answers and generally the article is quite good every month. It is good to see that I am not alone in my thoughts here - up to now noone has got the answers "right" according to the article!

I have a beginner mindset Yah, I think. I don't like 2 with KJT trump and Stiff . If partner doesn't move we prob haven't missed a game and if the opps compete to 2 then I can bid 2. Partner with 10+ should find another bid (beginners don't open light) if he has 4 we have a fit and raise to 3 should be right, or if he has both reds covered can bid 2nt (I then bid 3S to show the 3 card fit).

If he has 5 and both reds he can also bid 2nt, so the hard hand is 5332 with a red suit problem. I'd bid 2 as 2 is hard to fib in (partner jumps to 4 what now??) but 2 is safer as a 1 round force.

On the second hand I bid 2 it should be a 1 round force and over 2nt I bid 3nt, over anything else I think I bid 5
