Mbodell
1. 1♠.2. Not really on this hand.3. Not really on this hand.4. Yep, I'd pass 1♠.5. I'd bid 2♠ if partner X and bid 1♠ over my 1♥ call.
Trinidad
Hi! Welcome to the forums. There is a common method to evaluate balancing: You borrow a king from your partner. Then you do whatever you would have done in direct seat, with one exception. You have the option to make a jump overcall, which typically shows a good six card suit and a nice 13 to 16 points. In this case, you have a hand worth 16 in high cards, and with the added king that adds up to 19. However, the ♥K is worthless, I am not enthusiastic about the ♦KQx before the bidder either and the trump suit is very poor. So I will deduct the ♥K and another point leading to a total of 15. This means that I will just bid 1♠. With the North hand, I would pass 1♠. After all, I had 7 HCP, but there are only 4 left after partner borrowed a king from me. If I would have been North and South would have doubled, I would have bid 1♥, South would have bid 1♠ and North would bid 2♣ (or pass). South rebids hid spades. Now North passes. Fluffy
5. I'd bid 2♠ if partner X and bid 1♠ over my 1♥ call.I would not support partner with 2 small on this bidding, 2♣ sounds more reasonable. For me 1♠ can be 5 cards, and not even good ones. Agree on the other 4 responses you gave.

mich-b
I would seriously consider balancing with 2♠. While not very elegant (because my ♠s are weak) , it does show very well my range and my 6 card ♠ suit. After that pd can invite with 3♠ (looks ok opposite the approx 14-16 I showed) , and I might suggest 3NT, with my weak suit and good ♦ stoppers. This would be a very successful sequence , but imo not unreasonable.(1♦) -P - P - 2♠ P - 3♠ - P - 3NTAll Pass )
Zelandakh
Welcome to the forums. 1. 1S. As mich-d writes 2S may also be possible depending on which meaning you have ascribed it2. No3. No4. Pass5. 2C
teniente
So, you dont expect a nice/fair 5 card suit because of balancing?1D p p Xp 1H p 1Sp A.- I think Pass is not an optionB.- 2♠. Too little to support? I think is superior to pass.C.- A non forcing 2♣? I was north, and the bidding went as above.I would like to pass but I think I cannot.I raised 2♠ but, I admit, I never thought about 2♣ as an option.
whereagles
I'd just do the canonical dbl + bid spades later. Don't see any reason to get 'clever' here.
Phil
I just cannot bring myself to bidding 2♠ on Jxxxxx even though it describes my strength. So I would bid 1♠. Doubling is strange.
whereagles
Why? In the balancing dbl + bid a suit is 15+ or thereabouts. Seems like what I have.

I will NEVER convince my pard that I only have a stiff ♥ after doubling 1♦. We are big on shape with very few exceptions. I have sympathy for a 2♠ bid but it looks like a 5-card suit so 1♠ for me. Well, that's your problem. I'm perfectly fine with dbling.
Free
I don't see any alternatives to bidding 1♠. 2♠ and Dbl are awful imo, looking at distribution and suit quality instead of HCP is canonical, especially with a stiff King.
