GIB 4 bid explained as 11- HCP; 12 total points.

It looks like the GIB hand = 8HCP plus a singleton = 10 total points.

And besides the overall weakness, isn't the 4-level bid inappropriate

in a suit in which partner may only have three small?

It's increase to 12 to give that call. GIB has 10TP

The explanation of 1NT is not quite correct.

GIB didn't give Double or bid 2. So that limits your 1NT to exactly 2nd heart.

Also you didn't open 1, so your 1NT should be also 4-5 as you have 2 hearts so you can't have 3244 shape, but you can have 4234 on the other hand.

So it must limit your diamonds to 3-4 as well, in case you have 5 clubs.

It's risky 4 based on 12-14HCP only, but the GIB distribution is somehow attractive to deviate and raise. The default is pass, but after consideration it picked 4 in that case.

So it will be investigated for making it more sane, although as in real life you can't put all calls to follow the system. Sometimes you just pick the higher or lower promising call just because you consider you have/don't have reserves.

Thank you for replying.

I think I understand what you mean about my Club suit having to have at least 4 cards.

I am not sure what you mean about the correct evaluation of GIB point value. That would

still be an issue regarless of the length of South's Clubs.

I mean that GIB default call is pass as not qualify for 4. But it considered to "like" its hand and bid it.

So, the Support Double is prioritized over showing spade stoppers on an opening hand like:

AQTx, Jxx, Kxx, Kxx ?

Yes, Support double has higher priority then 1NT or rebidding the opened minor/major.

Irrelevant since gib knows you hold at most 3 spades with the opps having 9 and it having 1.

You would have to be 3334 and not make a support double. This is very unlikely/possibly impossible. You are almost sure to have 5 clubs, gib made a nice inference and a nice bid. He did not expect his partner to bid 5C with a weak NT opposite a passed hand, especially with Kx of spades. Gib cannot choose its partners however :)

Thanks. I've never played support doubles with anyone except GIB (they weren't popular back when I used to play "for real"), so I'm frequently unsure of such things.
