What to bid?

Recommended Posts

You didn't tell us the system --I.E., what 2C shows.

3C/1D in our alleged verson of 2/1 shows 10-12 and 6 clubs. Close enough for me.

Playing with someone and not having discussed how forcing a 2/1 bid (this one) is, I would probably wing it with 2C and just let things happen.

Not an established partnership. All red 3rd seat, no opp bidding:

You hold A4, Q64, J, KJ87643

Partner opens 1D. Question 1, do you bid 2C?

Assuming you do, what do you do after partner responds 3C?

fwiw I would bid 1nt planning on rebidding 3c invite over a 2d rebid. 1d=3c=gf in d for me. That means I dont have a way to show long clubs with a weak hand. If pard passes 1nt then hopefully I will be able to bid over opp balancing.

given op I bid 3s now.

I would gf this hand. Yes, it's an overbid, but anything else is a bigger underbid.

Vulnerable at imps the cost of missing a game through an underbid is worse than the cost of going down after stretching to game, unless one is doubled and it is rare that the opps can double what will sound like a power auction.

Imagine a weak notrump opposite....surely we will have at least a 40% chance for 3N?

I wouldn't bid 3 even if I had the tool in my kit, which I don't. This is not the right hand for it...the clubs aren't solid enough and we have BOTH majors stopped.....it would be asking too much for partner to move over 3 with a balanced 12 count.

And this doesn't even take into account the chances for 5 or slam....we know that such layouts may exist, and we also know that we probably can't ever make up for an initial underbid.

After 3, I'm torn between looking for 3N and looking for a club game/slam. The problem is I don't know partner's style. Would he raise clubs with Qxx Ax Kxxx Axxx? Or would he bid 2N with that?

if he'd raise with the 3244 hand type then, imo, we simply can't go beyond 3N, and I suspect that most would choose the raise with Axxx....after all, how many times do we hear: support with support?

So I choose 3. If partner bids 3N, I pass. If he takes some other call, I will play in game or slam depending on how excited he gets.
