It depends on your agreements (shocking! :) ).

I like to play that it is more that double is your first step and pass is your second. So playing 1430 then double is 1 or 4 keycards, pass is 0 or 3, 1st step is 2 w/o Q, 2nd step is 2 w/ Q. This makes sense to me. If you were in a straight blackwood/gerber situation then double is 0 (or 4) Aces, pass is 1 Ace, 1st step is 2 Aces, and 2nd step is 3 Aces - which fits with the DOPI name.

I find that more than half of the people I find at partnership desks agree with this reasoning, but not by a big number. I'd assume it undiscussed, but wouldn't be confident, and make a point of discussing it when someone asks "DOPI?".

Usually at the partnership desk I get 20-30 minutes to fill out a card before playing. I agree it would be better to spend more of that time on stylistic tendencies, especially on leads and carding, but generally we follow the ACBL convention card and hit each of the boxes asking about things. So in the slam bidding we'll usually agree to 1430, ask about specific K, Q ask, void showing responses, and DOPI. If someone doesn't play some of that with some of their partners, then fine, I will not play it with them (I.e., don't teach or argue about it), but if they do I'd like to know up front.

And while I know what DOPI stands for, a number of people still call D-14-P-30 DOPI as a name. They wouldn't likely call it double-zero-pass-one, but they would call it DOPI. See bridgehands footnote about advanced players for some corroboration.

I dont think u need to talk this with a pick up pd but i am sure what kind of RKCB responses is talked. It is also DBL = 1st step for me 03 or 14 keycards whatever our responses are then Pass=2nd step and then 2 keycard no Q then 2 kc +Q etc..

I don't understand why anyone playing that wouldn't at least say "reverse DOPI" to avoid misunderstandings.

After you agree D0P1 and pass to show 1 or 4, partner's next call is double. How confident are you as to whether this is a queen ask or penalty? ;)

Dbl is penalty, the lowest step in a suit (or NT) is Q ask.

It occurred to me immediately that Zel must have been attempting humor, subtle though it was.

The opponents have interferred and responder's pass shows we are missing two keys. The interference is beyond what we can make. So they get to play it undoubled?

Mike, here are the quick things u speak to a pick up pd

Name of system, 0314 or 1403, your methods vs their 1NT, carding. Assuming that i play with someone at my level or close, i would also assume that DOPI ROPI are standart. I dont speak with them about dopi/ropi as well as i dont speak if we play stayman/transfer over NT. I would expect him to apply DOPI just like our agreed 0314 or 1403 steps. Whether my expectation was accurate or not will be known at the end of the hand.

I like pedo, or dope. both have positive connotations and they always allow us to double them.

Well, you do of course have to play one of these (most commonly DEPO) if their interference is higher than 5 of your suit. It might be sensible to play it if their interference is one level below too.

Yes, I meant to say that I use it even if they interfere with 5 and we have spades (ROPE if they double).
