Partner redoubles...

An interesting bidding problem from the Ogden sectional:

J82

KJ62

54

AK96

Both vul, partner deals, pass-pass to you. Playing 2/1 and a strong notrump, I presume you will start with 1.

It goes X-XX-pass back to you. I presume you will pass; doubler tries 1D, partner doubles, RHO passes.

What now? And what do you think your chance of getting a good board is?

Depends on who my partner is, I think. We have agreements that we simply respond to 1CX, and that the redouble shows invite values with four clubs. In the case of a passed hand, it surely is an 11-count, since 1NT=8 to 10. Now it seems as if pard is 3-2-4-4, and I choose the cowardly 1NT over the chance of beating 1D a trick.

None of the above applies if the redouble denies a fit with clubs, in which case partner expects me to pass.

I wld pass. In std methods RDBL denies fit and shows desire to punish them. Whether this is the best way to use it or not is another story. Especially this auction says pd has no fit, or even if he does are 4-1 or 5-0 split, RHO has clubs. Probably opener bidding up the line and didnt wanna play 1 xx, he maybe playing 4-3 fit, 4-2 fit (his pd maybe assumed he is bidding his 5 card suit) But bottom line is i see no good reason for lifting this.

What does pd want ? He wants to play 1 doubled.

Did we promise pd more than what we have ? No

Are we afraid that they found a good spot ? No

Will the auction end if we pass ? We dunno yet.

I wld pass. Nobody gets rich by making 1 doubled. We are unlikely to make game so i dont even have to worry about it.

Partner has expressed a desire to defend 1D X. We have a real opener and 2 diamonds, and AK in partners short suit, obv pass. It is usually right to pull with a stiff D since defending at the 1 level doubled in their 8 card fit is a big gamble, but with 2 diamonds you should pass.

I think the odds of us getting a good board will depend on how well we defend, defending this kind of contract tightly is what MP is all about. I would certainly expect to beat them most o the time though.

At the table, we did pass out 1DX, and achieved the double-dummy result of letting it make one.

It seemed like a very normal result, AND our side risked getting too high and going off a couple in 3NT or somewhere silly -- so we were quite disappointed to get only 1 matchpoint on a 17 top for -140.

Full deal for anyone curious (and yes, both sides were vulnerable - but if you don't turn on "show bidding" it ignores the vulnerability when it chooses color settings, apparently)

It is definetely not a normal result, you should expect a very bad score for -140 imo. Your side has no risk in getting too high to start with. After redouble he can bid 1 NT or support and you will go nowhere with 12 hcp vs a pd coming from pass.

There are things to be said about your pd's willing to play 1 doubled. I strongly doubt that would be the choice of majority.
