Deal #5 from tournament #561 Robot Duplicate- Matchpoints 2011-11-04 18:07

Robot bid 2 Stayman here with Ax and Qxx saving me and 40 or so others from a likely fatal OL.

Poetic Justice was served for several of us who were 3NT= or +1 for 10.0% or 27.8%

And on the defensive side of the table how about the singleton K OL?

GiB plays non-promisory stayman. 2NT is a transfer to clubs and 2S is minor suit stayman, so all balanced invites without a 5 card major must bid 2C.

If you don't mind me asking, why did you duck the K lead?

Just luck you are playing against a GIB which doesn't choose the obviously spade switch. Beats me why it didn't start with spades.

Thank you for the quick reply. I had heard of minor suit transfers, but not minor suit Stayman.

I don't mind your asking. I cannot remember why I ducked. Likley I didn't think clearly and decided

" hold up" play was appropriate.

Edit PS: Is there an expanation for lead of singleton King?

Or you wanted them to shift to spades. Which they didn't, even though dummy didn't have 4.

GIB's system notes (explaining the 1N-2C-2D-2N sequence) are here: http://www.bridgebase.com/doc/gib_system_notes.php

Question for developers: Would it be possible to add "maybe no 4-card major" to the explanation of 2N, which currently is simply "9 HCP"?

Actually, it's a little trickier than I thought. When opener rebids 2 or 2, the 2NT rebid might or might not have 4 cards in the unbid major(s). But when opener rebids 2, it actually *denies* 4 spades, since it would bid 2{SP] with an invitational hand with spades. Right now, the same rule handles all 3 cases (in the last case, the rule that bids 2 takes precedence, so it doesn't get to this rule with 4 spades); to make the explanation vary, we'd need to add another rule that matches the last sequence specifically.
