Quartic
Sitting East in a club duplicate session, I picked up in second seat:[hv=pc=n&e=saq75h86dkcakt987]133|100[/hv] North opened a weak no trump, and I doubled for penalty. South redoubled to show a 5 card suit. Partner then found the excellent bid of 4♥. I thought for a bit and decided that partner should have at least a solid 6 card heart suit, or a semi-solid 7+ suit. I checked for keycards with 4NT, and bid 6♥ when partner showed 2 keycards and the ♥Q. The full hand was: [hv=pc=n&s=st82ht7djt732c654&w=s643hakq943dq94c3&n=skj9hj52da865cqj2&e=saq75h86dkcakt987&d=n&v=n&b=5&a=1n(12-14)dr(Relay%20to%202%21c%2C%20any%205%20card%20suit)4h(%21)p4np5s(2%20keycards%20and%20%21hQ)p6hppp]399|300[/hv] The best thing about this hand is I don't see how we could bid the slam without the weak 1NT opening from North.

All the posters would overcall 1N/1D
Free
You were just lucky, my opps' trumps always split 4-1...
Quartic
You were just lucky, my opps' trumps always split 4-1... Yes, trumps could split 4-1 (or maybe even 5-0), but this is much less likely when North has shown a balanced hand.
daveharty
It's nice that you and your partner were on the same page, but if I pulled my partner's penalty double of 1NT--at these colors no less--holding a solid six card suit, I don't think he would be calling the bid "beautiful." Admittedly the opps aren't likely to play in 1NTXX (although stranger things have happened), but partner might have them nailed in whatever black suit they run to. Seems like there is always time to bid your nonvulnerable game/slam after deciding a vulnerable penalty isn't sufficient. If you have the agreement that partner's bid shows precisely this kind of hand, okay, but it seems like you are going to be missing some juicy numbers. MrAce
but it seems like you are going to be missing some juicy numbers. They already did, even when opponents are only at 2 level and found a 9 card ♦ fit, 1100 was easy. It is more dramatic actually, 1100 was available even when there was no slam for them. mycroft
I'm not sure I really see the problem:(1♦)-2♣-2♥;2♠(natural, strong o/c, longer clubs)-4♥ seems to get across the same things out of both hands - strong opposite solid hearts and out. It is a fun hand, though (gotta get my licks in for the weak NT :-)
