If you bid 3S you play in a 3-2 fit.

If you bid 4C you play in a 4-3 fit.

If you bid 4D you play in a 5-4 fit.

If you pass and play against the same opponent I did, you score +200.

Partner had a 3-2-5-3 18-count.

What was the complete layout?

The reason that I ask is that I am curious about a few things.

First, was partner's double correct in the situation? That's somewhat dumb for the analysis, because it does not really determine what our bid should be, but it does tell us if the situation is one that is anti-percentage, meaning that partner should not have that hand. Maybe he could.

Second, what would partner do after any call? You indicate that certain calls will place you in a such-and-such fit. But, I am not certain that this is correct from what you describe. If partner has a 3253 18-count, he might hear my 3 call and pass, or bid 3NT, or bid 4, or even 4.

Third, I am curious as to what my RHO will do, if anything. As I mentioned, one of my personal reasons for bidding 3 is because the auction could continue:

3-X-P-3

P-P-X-XX

P-4...

Finally, what results occur on the play?

Preempts are made for a reason.

I am trying to construct a hand of 18 hcp 3253 with no stopper (or he shd have bid 3NT instead of DBL) and doesnt wanna bid 4 over 4, pd did a good job by passing though this time. 18 hcp is hard to pass, pd's average 5-8 hcp pretty much puts you in game zone. Perhaps he has Qx , i dunno. I still like 4.

With short clubs partner might bid 4 over your 4 call; the same cannot be said about clubs over diamonds.

That is a good reason for 4 but as far as I can see it does not make wank's reasoning less circular.
