Jinksy
Two decisions that worked out poorly for me in a match last night (teams of 6, IMPed): 1) [hv=pc=n&s=sqjh76542dkqj74c2]133|100|Favourable, dealer S.[/hv] You play 3 weak 2s (with the formal agreement that they need only contain 5 cards in this position) What's your call? 2) Which if any of the calls by S do you disagree with on the hand below? You formally play light openings in this position (as weak as about 7 if the suit is headed by AK and looks like a lead you want), and 14-16 NT. [hv=pc=n&s=skq5h54d64cakj954&d=n&v=0&b=1&a=pp1nd(either%20minors%20or%20majors)p2d(better%20minor)p2h(both%20majors%2C%205-4%20or%20better%2C%20not%20specifying%20better%20major)p2s(preference)ppp]133|200[/hv]
BunnyGo
1) I would pass. 2D is my second choice. 2) I do not like this 1NT. Not even close, and I'm all for off-shape NT. The bid was so bad that South could do nothing but pass afterwards.
rhm
1) Pass2) Not surprised that this decision did not work. I would not have opened 1NT I would have bid 3♣ over 2♠.East's better minor seems to be ♦ and West does not have minors. Of course 3♣ is risky, but indications are that you will find some ♣ and some values in dummy. It would be useful to know more about opponents methods, e.g. what a direct 2♠ over the 2♣ bid would have meant. If this is still pass or correct, indications are that East does not want to get to the 3 level with his minor suit holding. paulg
1) Pass. Second choice is pass. 2) I don't mind 1NT at all, it seems the normal action. However, having made the opponents guess, I would let them play in two spades. The danger of three clubs is that West might appreciate that his partner has working cards and they'll bid more. If this is still pass or correct, indications are that East does not want to get to the 3 level with his minor suit holding. I asked, but the answer was basically 'undiscussed'. The better minor bid was taken to be semi forced.

But if you do open 1NT you are required to bid 3C over 2D.
Cyberyeti
1. Favourable as dealer, I'm too good for 2♦ and have a 5 card major on the side, I would open at the 1 level or pass with no strong preference whether I open 1♦ (and treat it as 5-4) or 1♥. 2. Would bid 3♣
Free
wrong forum... 1. pass wtp2. 1NT is ridiculous, the rest is irrelevant
kemperb
1) Pass. I adhere to the "don't preempt with a LR+ in another major" philosophy, and this hand would be a game bid opposite a 1♥ opener. Opening 2♥ is way too much for me. 2) Dislike 1N. With concentration in the black suits, I prefer to open the suit on 6322. NT is likely to play better from pard's side, why hurry to open it? Once you open 1N, I think you have to take the plunge and bid 3♣, though this is much less clear.
gnasher
On the first one, opening 2♦ or 3♦ is fun, but unsound, especially with that spade holding. On the second one, I agree with 1NT. I'd bid 3♣ over 2♦.
nigel_k
You have to pass the first one. I wouldn't open 1NT on the second but can understand it. Definitely bid 3♣ though, preferably before they sort out which is their best major.
the hog
Pas on the first one. This is clear.1C on the second, not 1NT
JLOGIC
1C would be horrible in first or second but in 3rd I think it's definitely a winning bid. You have to bid 3C over 2D though.

whereagles
1. Pass. 2D if I feel like gambling, but the QJ of spades spells trouble, so better pass. 2. 1NT = yuck. What's the point bidding that? Total distortion of your hand... Anyway, having opened that, I guess I would bid 3C 2nd round.
