Although I think it is highly likely 2S will push

them to 3H, most safe 2S bids would have partner

acting directly.

For me, then it comes down to "how trigger-happy

are these opponents?" Rarely do I think well-discussed

opposing partnership's miss a 200..500+ penalty that

I offer with 2S.

Quits.

I also would act at all form of scoring except at total points when vulnerable.

The occasional loss are more than compensated by the frequent gains.

It is certainly easier to compete if you know something about the opps agreements for example they play Smolen.

I thought 2S was clearcut at the vulnerability, where you will frequently gain a couple of imps for -50 vs -110 or +110 vs +50. If either side was vulnerable, it would be less clear to me, but I would probably still bid. So I was rather surprised to see both Grue and Versace pass in this position! Think it was bd 1 of set 3 of the semi-final.

As usual I did not remember the hand lol. How did not balancing work?

Here's the whole hand:

[hv=pc=n&s=sj74hk7642d54cqj2&w=sqt853ha8d972ca63&n=sak9hqjdakt3ct875&e=s62ht953dqj86ck94]399|300[/hv]

At your table, 2 made 3. At the other table the auction was:

1 (HURD)-(P)-1-(1Weinstein)

1NT-AP

making 2.
