when your partner opens 1n and you have a weak hand and a 5 card major

you transfer and leave it in what could be a 52 fit because it rates

to be safer than 1n. The same principle applies here---you know the 2d

bidder has at least 5 diamonds and you have no "safer" cantract to

go to so pass

If the 1C opener is sure to have a balanced 12-14, I think you should pull to 3C.

Why? Because if pard had a good 5 or 6 card diamond suit, he could have bid it instead of 1NT. Playing diamonds, even if opps let you ruff hearts it's gonna be with high cards. Besides, since LHO seems to have a trap pass of spades, you're not going to have an easy time end playing him.

In contrast pard, who has 1-2 spades, can very well have 2353 or 1453. Even a 2452 rates to play better in clubs. You're gonna look silly if you find pard with 2461 and QJxxxx, but pard would probably bid the same way with

xx Kxxx QJxxx Ax

in which case you're probably better off pulling to 3C. And that's not nearly the best hand he could have for clubs.

Finally, this isn't so clear if opener can unbalanced with 5C and 4D. But in that case you're pretty much cooked anyway.

Well this is not so bad now really as it appears 1S has stirred up some action. I love my hand for D. I do not expect my partner to have a hopeless hand having bid 1NT. Pass surely must be best, besides the bidding isn't over yet and if they want to play in H I am confident partner will love that.

Partner doesn't need to have some stopper, opener just showed a 12-14 balanced hand by opening an artificial 1...

Sure, but since he's bid the suit a I'd use 1nt to show a hand suited to NT with the bid suit stopped and no support for pards, simpler that way.

Against a short system, 1 can be 2 (I've seen systems with 1 as a mimimum) but I still use 1nt in the bidding sequence given to show a club stopper esp as opener can have a club suit and often does.

If partner has 1 then he isn't suited to NT, if he has xx KJxx AQJxx xx then I wouldn't bid 1nt. I'd bid 2d I don't believe 2 shortages is suited to NT. If he has 6 he shouldn't bid 1nt, So partner has either 3+ clubs or honour doubleton, still bidding 3.
