popovitsj
I'm curious to learn what you guys think about these two situations that occurred at my club last night. In the first hand I'm not sure if raising 3♣ is a good bid by me, but I also feel my partner might be a little too weak too make 2♣ in the first place. BillPatch
On the first hand 3♣ was poor. Your hand was minimum, shape was minimum, heart values duplicated known sortness in partner's hand. Partner's overcall was worse. Weak 5 card suit 2 level overcalls are asking for the axe, It also failed to direct the proper lead. On the second hand double by partner would have been poor. Your K♥ was likely finessable. If the opponents bid poorly you are already headed for a top. If the contract was normal a double would likey trade an average mius to a bottem. Also, partner is on lead, a double (Lightner)suggests an unusual lead, which he doesn't want.
neilkaz
Hand 1) Pard's OC is quite light, both in playing strength and suit quality. Your 3♣ is too weak and quacky considering that on the bidding your QTx in ♥ look dubious. Hand 2) PD's double may tell them how to pick up the trump suit and if this results in 6♥x making rather than down 1, it is a disaster. He should pass. EricK
On the first hand, 2♣ is not good opposite a passed hand (it's not good opposite a non-passed hand either!). But supporting with North, assuming South actually has his bid, is not bad, IMO. On this auction, I would expect him to have, say, the ♣K extra and a ♥ fewer, when 3♣ is fine. Actually, I think North should bid 2♠. Since he has already passed up the opportunity to open a weak 2, this must show 5 reasonable ♠ plus ♣ tolerance. I will now let the better players tell me why I am wrong :)
