calm01
Hi, I currently have limited belief that using this forum for reporting bugs (big or small) actually results in GIB being substantially improved. The main function of the GIB part of the forum appears to be to annoy those who work for BBOL and are already frustrated that more resources have not been allocated to improving GIB. So I have three questions including one for Fred G.: 1) Is there a list of GIB releases/versions and dates implemented with detail of bug fixes included in each release/version? 2) Is such a list made accessible to us users? 3) Could those from BBOL who kindly reply to real or apparent bug reports please do so without giving the impression that Fred G. allocates little or no resources to improving GIB? Regards, calm01 I am not sure which question is intended for me, but I assume it is question #3: First, I am not the person who allocates resources. That would be one of Uday's responsibilities. My primary responsibility is that of a programmer. Uday is our CEO (and a programmer and...). Second, I don't think that part of the job description of our GIB programmer is or should be to worry about the impressions you receive about how we choose to allocate our resources. Third, the impression you have received is wrong. We have had a person working on GIB close to full time for the past 3+ years. Uday and I are also involved in various ways (we both help with testing and analysis, Uday helps with some technical issues, and I help make bridge-related decisions). Other members of our staff are peripherally involved. Uday and I are both very happy with the performance of the person who is currently in charge of improving GIB. GIB bug reports are appreciated and useful, but I get the impression that a handful of bug reporters are more interested in seeking attention, trying to show how smart they think they are, or venting rage, than they are in actually helping us. I hope my impression is as wrong as yours is. Fred GitelmanBridge Base Inc.www.bridgebase.com
calm01
Fred, Tanks for your prompt and informative reply to one of the three queries. Feedback on bug fixes successfully implemented is not a lot to ask for as it costs little and provides substantial benefits - a good return on investment. Examples for popular software products are: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/ff959805 http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/releases/ If a user is not aware of new features/bug fixes he/she is unlikely to fully benefit from them and thus some of the development effort is effectively wasted as it is neither totally visible nor can it be fully appreciated. You site advertises new features such as bridge bingo - why not advertise GIB enhancements in the Robot World section of the site? Antrax
TBH, I also got the impression GIB code is very difficult to extend so that existing resources are insufficient. This is mostly because some bugs (not leading an ace against 7NT for instance) are not fixed for extended periods of time. On the other hand, I've only read the article about how GIB works and haven't seen a single character of code, so it's quite possible what seems simple to fix is actually quite deeply ingrained in the system.
