Should we find this slam?

Recommended Posts

Matchpoints, all vul. RHO (I'm east) deals and opens 1, opponents silent after that.

Our auction:

X-2, 4 (undiscussed, I felt this would show a "big double" type of hand with a good heart suit, 3H could conceivably be 5H and 12 HCP) - 5 (intended as natural, I took it as a cue in support of hearts), 5 - 5, 6

AQ of spades with RHO and hearts 4-1, spade lead

I would responsd 3C with West after a double but then I do play 2S as game-forcing here. Then 3H from East gets most of the strength across but not the 6th heart. Probably next comes 3S - 3NT. West could move again over this if feeling good about life (or seeing partner's cards ;) ) but it is MPs so...

Maybe, you should; but I am pretty sure we wouldn't (reach slam). Some kinda MamaPapa auction to find the 6-2 heart fit and game...regardless of whether we start with double or with 2H.

This.

Thanks. 3NT+3 was the second-best result, with most pairs in 4H+2.

6 NT is interesting. Unless the defense is helpful, it seems we cannot untangle the club King for the 12th trick without losing to the club queen. "Helpful" would mean they would lead a spade at trick one, or pop the ace on the first lead if I have to break the suit.

Good point. I don't see how to make 6NT on a diamond lead and RHO ducking when I lead the first spade from dummy.

Hook 9 or find a stiff 10 ?

There is also be a squeeze if N has Q and AQ.

Win the diamond in the long heart hand, heart to A, spade to J, A, 5 more rounds of :

[hv=pc=n&s=shdqj8c4&w=s8hdkckj&n=saqhdcq8&e=sk7hd42c]399|300[/hv]

Now a diamond to the K fixes N, if he ditches a spade, playing a spade means he has to give dummy the KJ, if he ditches a club, the Q drops.

Even if N does not have Q he's still in trouble. If he pitches a club from xx, K and a spade fixes him, if he ditches a spade, leading a spade endplays him. the only way he can defeat you is to start with 3 or more diamonds and keep them.

The problem with this layout is that you know N has the QJ - only 11 HCP missing and he opened the bidding. Or is it okay if N has diamond honors?

Diamond honours are irrelevant, as long as he has AQ and Q, he has to discard all his diamonds. You only fail to make 12 if he has something like AQxxxx, x, QJxx, xx and he keeps 2 diamonds and 2 spades in the end position.
