How Many Spades?

I'd open it 1. I don't mind 4, but I hate 3 with so much defence.

I agree that it doesn't seem right to open 3 on hands with "so much defence", but it's hard to see how this hand falls into this category. In practice, this sort of hand tends to take more defensive tricks if you open 3 than if you open 1, as a 3 opener will often persuade an opponent to play your partner for high cards outside spades.

Would you also open 1 on QJ10xxxx 2 KJ2 32?

Wasn't there a thread about this a while back? If we are N/S, we are:

Board 1: at Love all

Board 2: at (in?) Red

Board 3: at Green

Board 4: at Game all

Well this was just one of the British usages, there was also Amber for unfavourable and some other expressions.

That's a mixture of two terminologies. The normal English terms are "Love all", "Unfavourable", "Favourable" and "Game all". You will often see these in print, and they even appear in the ACBL Encylopedia of Bridge. Colloquially, people may use "White", "Red", "Green" and "Amber". Obviously, the latter scheme is best avoided on an international forum.

I flipped 5 quarters into the air

as to how they landed I did not care...

4 out of 5 said 3. Even without the quarters I would open this 3 if I couldn't use 2. I would only open this 1 in a partnership or system that opens super light (Incision/Zar/John Kranyak)

I will open 2 showing 8-12 points and a 6 card suit and be happy that I play that method when I pick this hand up :)

Sadly you are not playing American weak twos. Your Two Spade opener at love all would be 5-9 with six spades.

Well the hand fits nicely into the 5-9 range. The seventh makes it a maximum but not out of range. 8 HCP looks about right to me.

I would happily trade in all these honors for 2 aces.

I admit I never understood the argument of those, who would never open a weak two with a seven card suit.

For an 8-12 "American" weak two I would definitely consider this hand minimal, the seventh notwithstanding.

The Ruben Kaplan evaluator (which is good for suit contracts) puts the total value of this hand at 9.55, of which 2 points were attributed to the 7321 distribution.

I would not be at all happy about opening 2 Spades at love all on A9xxxxx x Axx xx. But then I would not be happy with any call.
