nigel_k Posted September 19, 2011 Report Share Posted September 19, 2011 Why upgrade and if you open 1♣, what do you bid over partners 1♥?AJ10xx is an excellent holding because jacks and tens aren't worth much by themselves but here they are part of a combination that hugely increases their trick taking potential. Here are some examples from Kaplan/Rubens: Jx ATx Q82 A5432 10.9 (moved J and 10)xx Axxx Q82 AJT5 11.85 (no 5 card suit)Tx Jxx J82 AKQxx 11.20 (good 5 card suit but unsupported jacks and tens)xx Axx Q82 AJT53 12.05 (actual hand) Having a five card suit is good but this shows that most of the boost in value comes from the AJT combination lifting the contribution of the minor honours. Over partner's 1♥ I would bid 1NT. 2♥ would be ok as well but for me it's too much of an overbid with a balanced minimum and only three card support. My openings have become signifcantly more disciplined. :) I sent this hand to my regular partner, do you open this, does vulnerability matter? his replyNo and no, but its close. Rule of 20 is a pretty good guideline, problem with opening this type of hand is that partner becomes less likely to invite if 11 point openers with little shape are possible. If this hand is not good enough to open for you, that's a matter of style, but if you don't see that this is a very good 11-count then there is something wrong. Would never overcall 1♠, second choice would be 2♠ NV, but pass here. Fluffy Posted September 22, 2011 Report Share Posted September 22, 2011 Over 2♦ you cannot pass jilly, you have to bid something cos this can easilly be your hand. Double is the way to act. Opening 1♣ and rebidding 1NT is not a bad idea either, but its a matter of style. I'm shocked that you even asked what would you rebid if you opened, balanced minimum hands rebid 1NT, whatever you had in mind that didn't make 1NT rebid obvious is something you rather get rid off quickly. Leaving my partner in 2N just seems like I hate my partner. I know we have a club fit, and I know we have 17 HCP so why would I leave partner in 2N? Faulting jilly for bidding 2N with an 11 count and a diamond stop is a bit hard on her, that's what 2N shows. She is vulnerable and has a great hand and might have a vulnerable game. I am sure that Bobby Levin and Steve Weinstein would not open with that hand, and they do pretty well. By far the biggest problem on this hand was the pass of 2N.
