We are south csaba, the question is about our overcall.

I would bid 1S and think that this is good. 5-5 is very powerful when a good fit is found, and I prefer to look for it at the 1-level. It's mostly a matter of agreement though.

I think another big thing going for it is that partner is a passed hand, but I'd probably bid 1 even if they weren't

It is pretty ugly, but at MP I'd at least seriously consider doing it anyway. It's not like this auction is going to get any safer...

On the other hand, partner is reasonably likely to lead a spade anyway against their eventual heart contract, and we don't really want to invite him to be a hero and sacrifice over 4H.

A passed partner can't really have a natural 2NT bid opposite one of my overcalls, especially in an auction like this where it is so easy for us to reopen if partner passes. I'd prefer to play 2NT as a spade raise but I guess we have to assume is it natural without discussion and probably we have no agreement about 3 either.

I would pass and hope the opponents come to the rescue with either double or 3. Of course it would be nice to bid 3 and play there but I don't see this happening unless I precede 3 with an insufficient bid then correct it.

Agree with Nigel. 2NT is unlikely to be useful in a natural sense by a passed partner when the opponents have opened and been raised. It is extra distribution in hearts and clubs on my planet ---as opposed to a responsive double with less extreme distribution and a couple spades.

I am confident enough about this, that the only question is how many clubs I want to bid. 3C might be right, as a hedge in case I don't know for sure that pard resides on my planet.

I think there are enough ways of raising my spades, including bidding spades.

Yeech I guess I am very old school, I made the 2N bid on xx,Axx,Q82,AJT53. Playing modern I have to pass, or open this garbage.

My r/l partners play 2N natural too.

Even if you play 2NT as natural, why would you want to bid it on that hand? After they take the first five diamond tricks, you need to take the rest; and if you do, maybe there was a better spot to play for your eleven tricks.

If pard would bid 2NT with that, my hedge of only rebidding 3C would look pretty good.
