RHO Opens 2NT and you have 7=1=0=5

4. showing clubs has little merit, you only want to play in clubs if you can somehow find out for sure that partner has 4 clubs, we won't manage that. Also, goofing around on the 3 level is not something for me on 7-5s.

Not 100% sure about the hands.

I did lead A because I expected partner to have a singleton and 5X did go -1.

4 would have worked better.

why is the system so horrible? lots of good pairs play suction against 1NT and if you don't want to spend a long time discussing defense to 2NT you might as well just agree to play the same as against 1NT. Who cares, you almost never want to overcall over 2NT anyway.

Competing over 1NT is different from competiting over 2NT. After 2NT it is almost always their hand. If you give responder the option to double an artificial call that denies the suit bid you certainly make life a lot easier. 3H and 3S absolutely have to be natural in these auctions.

Of course, if you are of the opinion that bridge is for fun and who cares, then indeed the methods are fine.

Agree with both statements.

We play same system over 2NT as over strong 1NT. Maybe not best, but that is easiest. Over 2NT it is almost never done, so we think it is not that important.

(and in the example given I could have bid 4S).

Its not that your system is horrible----it is the fact that you tried

to use it with a hand that had only a tiny chance that accuracy would

pay off more than preemtion. If one of your small clubs had been the Q

I would have used your system with no qualms but overall your hand is

so weak defensively that the preemtive bid of 4s is a stand out

(not because it is the most accurate) but because it is hugely preemptive

and has the best chance to cause the opponents to err and has a great %

chance of being the best your side can hope for.
