Hi Phil, why not?

1. My Q is a dubious value.

2. I have both minors. Opening the bidding with these hands makes it easier for the opponents to come in.

Its close. I like my AK-K, and if I held both majors, or even one major, I'd open.

I open here. Certainly I'd prefer that one of my minor suits were a major and it would be nice to see some tens in my hand, but I like my two minor suits and I like 5431. I have no rebidding problems and don't mind hearing a 2 response to my 1 opening. Yes, the queen is dubious, but I think the rest of the hand makes up for it. I know some players that would open this if the queen were the deuce, but I am not one of them.

In any of my 2/1 partnerships I would pass, for the reasons Phil described, plus I tend to get bad results when partner plays 3NT. I MIGHT open this hand if I had something like 2 = 5+, 4+, 11-15 (a pair I know play this). In a Precision context, I'll open it all day, only because partner knows I open all 11s and won't hang me.

Too bad you didn't have a 'maybe, depends on partner'. That's my vote, so I'll abstain from voting in this poll.

I'd much rather open it, and have an easy 2C rebid if I need it, than respond with it, and despair of ever showing my second suit.

Make it 1-3-4-5 instead of 1-3-5-4 and you could talk me into passing much more easily.

What do you think about answer from my partner?

Expecting 1h I opened, because my Q in partner's longer should be not so bad. ...because may be difficult to bid something after pass opening. ...because I remember the system in guess situations to explain to my partner my possible missguesses.

---------------------------

So:

1d - 1h

2c - 2s

?

IMO, this is not appropriate. There is legitimate debate about whether the hand is an opening bid, and the answers depend on style and system for those who think before answering. It might be an easy choice in your style, but it is just as easy an opposite choice in someone else's.

Even the follow-up question about what to do after FSF brings up an interesting question by Antrax, the answer also dependent upon agreements and should be a consideration before the hand is opened (or not).

:P I, personally, would open the hand, but it is right on the cusp. Opps seem to have more problems when our side gets in the first bid. I have an easy rebid of 1NT at MP's or 2C at IMP's. I just can't visualize how we can comfortably get back into the auction if I pass. This is certainly not my favorite hand to open, and it could easily go wrong. Bridge is a game of percentages.

Probably not "hate".

Their methods were o.k. for them, back then; and I believe some tools they used have been refined and are still being employed today.

Their standards for an opening bid, and their wait-around approach to entering the opponents' auction would not be successful against strong modern pairs, however.

I suspect the "Roth Stone" approach Mike777 uses is not pure, but rather more in-tune with modern conditions.
