Using the Force

Can you post here/email me the final defence? I'd be interested to see what you came up with (and I might be able to cause irritation by pointing out possible problems)

And of course it isn't unsporting. I am sure that MickyB thinks this opening is worth playing for its bridge merit, and therefore will gain even against the best possible defence.

My team played 40 boards against MickyB this weekend (he didn't get out of bed in time to play the first 20). The two-bids came up three times:

That was a swing to us, but not really related to anybody's methods.

The NS diamond fit got lost, so we gained again. A natural 2 opening would probably have been passed out.

Over the 2 opening, I could instead have doubled, showing an overcall in hearts or a takeout double of hearts. Partner's options would then have been:

- 2, saying he'd pass a 2 overcall. Now I'd probably pass, but I could move with 3, showing a good heart overcall with four spades.

- 2, showing heart support if I had hearts, and constructive with spades if I had a takeout double. Now I'd bid 4 - I'm expecting him to be 4-3, and in spades we'd be risking heart ruffs.

- 3, showing heart support if I had hearts, and constructive with clubs if I had a takeout double. Again we'd play in 4.

- 2NT, artificial and game-forcing. Now I'd bid 3, showing a heart overcall with spades on the side, and partner would raise.

Our methods here should probably be a bit different because he's a passed hand. Anyway, I'm glad I avoided the two-way double murk.

(I think this is right, but I wasn't at the table.) North started with double because he was too strong for 2 or 2NT, then chose 3NT to protect his diamond holding.

I'm not sure that these deals tell us much, but I'm pleased that nothing went wrong. That's it for this year, unless some of Mike's other opponents decide to adopt the same defence.

[Edited to correct the auction on the second board.]

The auction needs correcting on the second hand. The auction on the third hand is correct.

On the first, I passed throughout as North. I was worried that 5, even on the second round, might be interpreted as pass-or-correct. I think I was affected slightly by a disaster on the board before, I was loathed to risk another misunderstanding. Anyway, not the best adverts for the method.

Our oppo in the previous match were using Gnasher's defence, but the bid didn't come up at all.
