To Fred about his new 3.8 version

Recommended Posts

Hi, Fred.

You wrote in

"Most of the work that Uday and I have done during the past month is related to vugraph and the new version is enabled for this purpose. "

What a pity that you didn't make wider the dimension of your "mp" tag array (limited to 64 values) and all your arrays limited to 128 values.

See my message :

http://bridgebase.lunarpages.com/~bridge2/...&hl=lin+file+64

that you never answered.

A minor detail : your new version appears here with a new font. I prefer the earlier presentation.

PS : I can't answer your announcement of 3.8 new version because the

section is locked. It has been already mentionned.

Update version doesn't touch settings (it didn't till now, didn't check last version, installed with Setup), Setup does touch some like font, cards, animated cards, no talk from enemies and see all hands when dummy, so you have to modify the settings again.

Hi Erkson,

Sorry, but I did not see the post you refer to or I would have responded something like this:

Sorry, but it is not going to happen any time soon.

Our first vugraph program was written for the ACBL in 1991. In those days memory and disk space were not cheap so I put a limit on the number of boards in a .lin file to 64 (the number of boards in a Spingold/Vanderbilt match).

Unfortunately at that time I did not understand the value of making this a contstant. As such, references to the number 64 occur in many places throughout the vugraph source code (which is now part of the BBO source code). It would be not be trivial to change this. In anticipation of this question: No, global search and replace would not do the trick.

As far as I remember, however, in the past 13 years your post is the only request that I have ever had to up this limit. That leads me to believe that it is not worth the effort to make this change (at least not while I have other worthwhile things to work on).

Probably I will do something about this one day, but not until I sit down for a few months and do a general rewrite of the software. I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for this.

Sorry...

I chose the "update" option, so my settings were not modified.

If I display a movie .lin file with 3.7 version I like the display. If I display the same file with 3.8.7 version, figures are wider and blacker (something like boldface characters).

We changed the font on the scoreboard so that when BBO is used to display vugraph to a live audience at the playing site in a large auditorium, it will be easier for the people to read what is being displayed.

Ok, Fred. Thanks for your answer. No problem. I guessed the causes of limitation, but I didn't imagine that solution to it was more than a matter of replacing some [64] and a few "if... < 64..." with a greater number.

I will wait until you decide to modify it.
