whereagles
...are these foruns losing momentum as of lately? Seems like less threads are posted and some regulars appear to be less active these days.

whereagles
I hope so. I like it more when the forum is so busy I can't keep track of stuff :)

JLOGIC
Definitely getting less active. Same with RGB. High volume regulars like jdonn leaving, many just much less active like han, cherdano, myself, etc and not that many high-volume newcomers. glen
Well Justin does not need to post here if he keeps hitting home runs like this today: the-negative-effects-of-professionalism-on-bridge-pros
Phil
Actually I thought we went through a lull a few months ago, but Justin is active again, MikeH is back, and Frances is posting again. Gnasher is active. The only really good poster that doesn't participate anymore is JDonn. We need about another 1/2 dozen good players to sign up. mikeh
Well Justin does not need to post here if he keeps hitting home runs like this today: the-negative-effects-of-professionalism-on-bridge-prosIt is a great post. I wonder whether the effect Justin has noticed about professionals has also infected, tho perhaps for different reasons, the good amateur players in NA. Even for amateurs, there is concern over finding good teammates....no, we won't be fired, but maybe we won't be asked to play in the next major event. And as amateurs, we study the habits of the pros....after all, they live and breathe bridge while for us it is only a hobby....if they shy away from high variance action, isn't that because high variance action is losing bridge? Justin makes a strong case that it isn't (at least, not if done well). So maybe it isn't....maybe it's winning bridge against one's peers or against players stronger than we are. Now if only I could convince my teammates :P

Now if only I could convince my teammates :P It is a great post and I think there's a lot of truth in it. The fundamental difference between being on an amateur team and being on the pro team is that (in general) your teammates are a similar standard to you. Surely part of the 'will I get fired' worry is that the sponsor won't understand why you have taken a particular action. There is an English sponsor who has told their team very clearly they are not to defend doubled partscores, basically ever. They still do it sometimes, and when one makes there's a huge row about it - and (I think) this is one reason why a great player was eventually fired from the team, because they wouldn't take that sort of instruction. JLOGIC
Well Justin does not need to post here if he keeps hitting home runs like this today: the-negative-effects-of-professionalism-on-bridge-pros Heh, there is a high correlation in me posting on the forums and posting on my blog though, as pretty much I am either thinking about bridge/want to talk about it, or I don't. JLOGIC
Doesn't this drastic drop coincide with the installation of the new forum software? I know jdonn and I both quit posting when the new forums came out, that might account for like 500 of the posts, lol
