Apparently 4♠ put EW in FP situation and double by south was some kind of an action double, which apparently doesn't establish FP. Do you have better explanations? aguahombre
North knows what kind of hand (no defense) he overcalled 3D on. If South bids 5D instead of doubling, North might visualize that the vul opponents are making. The double put both N/S in the dark.

However, well done for finding what the par score is. ArtK78 gets well done for finding the par score. aguahombre
I used might/maybe type words, already seeing what par was and trying to avoid obvious resulting by using "should" or some other opinionated words. Just intended to figure out what might go through N/S minds if South did something different.
ArtK78
The par score on this hand is 650 E/W, as N/S can be held to 8 tricks in diamonds double-dummy. Opening lead is a low spade to the K, and West shifts to a low heart. No matter what declarer does now, the defense must score a spade, 2 hearts and 2 clubs. By the way, a low club lead works just as well. East will have to underlead his ♠A later in the play.
MrAce
I dont really care about the par, even if 6♦ was only -500. The goal is to bring opponents to 5 level, anyone who wants to sacrifice over opponents 5M contract at 6 level is out of their mind imo. I also dont care how serious opponents might be, i am serious too when my pd opens 1NT and i bid 3 NT with 11 hcp and there had been times we did not even have a play for it. Also there is flip side of this coin, they may indeed be serious, even more serious than we expected and be cold for slam. (make ♦s 3-0 for example) NS should be happy that they reached their goal, brought them to 5 level, thats good money in long run, even if they make this one. It is highly unusual for BOTH sides EW and NS to have created a FP scenario.
Onedown
I would NEVER consider bidding 3♦. I must handle my hand as if my RHO opened a single suited weak 2 and make a choice now to pass or bid. 3 ♦is an outright lie to partner, promising beaucoup defensive values plus a 1/2 decent suit.THEREFORE, I have 2 choices, and that is wait and see or bid 5♦ immediately. Even 4♦is better than 3♦, but exerts no pressure on my LHO. Partners X is fine as it was based on me having my 3 ♦bid which of course I did not. The discussion of what to do after we have pushed a vul opp to the 5 level, she be based on my premise that in a competitive auction such as this, the opps own the 5 level.
Phil
By the way, a low club lead works just as well. East will have to underlead his ♠A later in the play. Not if I lead spades first.

P_Marlowe
Hi, I doubt that 4S created a FP for EW. I think 4S is reasonable, I dont understand 5S. The only positive thing to sayabout 4S is, it worked out.It may well be, that the meaning of 4S was, that 4S was bid to make, but ... With kind regardsMarlowe
