What do you bid?

I think knowing pairs or teams is important here.

Agree with 3, but I'm uncomfortable.

While I rarely open a weak 2 with 5, this might be the hand for it. I like to think that I definitely would have done it in teams so as to maximally obstruct any possible vulnerable game they have.

All of the above, especially the uncomfortable part.

We are risking a 5-2 fit instead of a ?-3 fit in all circumstances but pard should probably play us for a tolerance. My next headache is if pard bids 3 over 3.

I can give several reasons to open weak 2's on 5-card suits but given my track record on doing it you should do the opposite.

5332 is not the hand for it. Neither is second seat.

3S, I have a fit and not enough to bid game, keep it simple.

Agreed. If we belong in 4 PD can carry on. It may look like we have quite alot for just bidding 3 but we have 3 small trumps and likely 2 losers since they are often 6-3-2-2 on this bidding.

I agree with the initial pass.

I wouldn't have opened the hand.

I'll bid 4 now. I assume partner has more than just an opening hand to overcall. Something like:

AKQxx

xx

xx

AQxx

Lose 2 diamonds and probably a club.

Of course if partner has A then you can probably pitch diamonds on the good hearts.

My answer would be different if I expected my partner to overcall any preempt on a bare minimum opener.

I agree with all of Justin's posts on this thread, perhaps most of all with the 'sigh'.

For those who claim 3 has to show spades, that is true only if there are never any hands with long hearts with which you wouldn't open and may now want to bid hearts naturally. I know there are players who think like that....but I don't think it is standard.

I would bid 3 now. That shows fit or at least tolerance for me.

I am asking myself "Should i spare this 3 bid by passed hand for the hands that somehow did not open 1 or 2 at these colors, has no fit or tolerance but can bid at 3 level and cross his fingers for nothing bad to happen, or should i spare it for fit showing bid, which by the way can be used in wide purpose and can be made with just 4 or even 3 card concentrated suits such as AQJx AKJ in case in opponents may decide to put some more pressure on us and too good to just bid 3 and has no space to cue etc etc.

Of course a persistent poster can construct hands where the passed hand has no fit or tolerance but must bid at 3 level a new suit. But i will pay off for those hands if these hands somehow are not passable or can not be shown by a DBL. A simple 3 bid can be made with a wide variety of hands. Points can be anywhere or a little bit of everywhere. Pd is also under pressure and we are already at 3 level with no game trial space available, Why would i give up on my ability to give a better picture of my hand to partner for the sake of sparing it to the hands which had the chance before but didnt, and now wants to bid at 3 level and cant even pass or DBL.

Based on the principle of "if you know what trumps are going to be, let your partner know too" I decided to bid 3 or 4 spades. Because I had a good 5 card side suit, I decided to just bid 4. Seems from the posters above that this is a tad on the aggressive side. Here's the whole hand.

Who knew it was partner with the short diamonds and me with the short clubs?

We are NV vs VUL i have no clue on what hand you would pass first round and bid 3H now (rather than making a neg X) ?
