(1D) D (1H) 1S 1n the 1st: ----Double is penalty of 1♠----2♥ shows about 7-9----3♥ is about 10-12 The 2nd: -----1♠ can be shaded a little; perhaps a decent 5 count With anything less, pass to 'box' your hand. Generally you should forget about games in competitve especially when both your opponents bid, its more importent to be able to follow the law of total tricks. My pd and I try to bid at all costs, so I would bid here with a 4-5 count and 5H. Incidentally if my pd Xs and I have a 12 count, I doubt I am stopping below game. Incidentally if my pd Xs and I have a 12 count, I doubt I am stopping below game.I'm not going to make too big of a deal about this, but especially new players need to understand the concept of 'boxing' their hand. You can't bid 2♥ in the auction on all of the following hands: [hv=s=sxxhqjxxdxxxckxxx]133|100|[/hv][hv=s=sxxhqjxxdxxxckxxx]133|100|[/hv][hv=s=sxxhqjxxdxxxckxxx]133|100|[/hv] If you take a 'bid at all costs' approach, partner cannot make a intelligent competitive decision, since your strength is random. Much better to pass first (the 1♠ call is theoretically forcing, right? So you'll get a chance in this auction) and compete later if necessary. The initial pass confines your hand to less than a certain HCP (whether it be less than 6, or 5, or 4 or whatever), so when you compete later, partner has a real good idea about what you have.
