onoway
The other day I caught the last half of an interview with an engineer who carried a table and a couple of chairs down to a street corner and set himself up to give free advice. He said he was astonished that not only did people stop and sit down but pretty soon there was actually a lineup of people waiting up to 40 minutes to talk to him. Apparently he does this regularly and even has a few regulars.:) He doesn't claim/pretend to have any training in psychology or finance or anything; if someone asks he tells them no, in 'real life" he is an engineer. gwnn
Most people looking for advice actually only need encouragement/confirmation. A trained goldfish could do that, so why not an engineer?

Free
There's nothing wrong with asking. Nobody says I have to anything with his advice, but he may have a different point of view, a different angle on the subject, which I haven't considered. You never know. However, I wouldn't specially go there to sit at his table. And if I'd pass his table and decided I'd sit down, I also wouldn't ask just any question. hotShot
If people still had real friends, they would not need advice from strangers.
helene_t
A few weeks ago a drug addict asked a random passersby (who happened to be me) what I thought she should do to get clean of drugs. I found that a little odd. If she had asked me for the way to the post office I would have found it normal, though. So I think it depends on the question. dicklont
Maybe I would ask how to train a goldfish. That seems a lot harder to me than a dog or a horse or even a cat.Is it at all possible to train a goldfish?

I understand there is a high correlation between bridge players and random drug addict queries. (Probably something to do with the glazed look in the eyes after a 4-session final.) helene_t
:D Does this dress make my ass look too big? That's a good one but one thing I had to get used to when I moved to the Netherlands was that you don't even have to ask strangers such questions, they will offer their opinion unsolicited. Never thought about it this may but it may be related to the large number of Dutch bridge players. Always prepared to offer expert advice on opps or partner's bidding :)
