Another case of responding to preempt

  1. 1. Your bid?

Recommended Posts

7H for me playing pard for a doubleton spade and 8 hearts to the king. I suppose he could have 8 hearts to the QJT so maybe I should bid 4N there. Too late now.

Sorry, I entered the bidding wrong. It's been corrected now. Does that change your answer?

Over 3H, my first instinct is to bid 4C = cheaper minor showing slam interest and asks pard to describe his hand.

Maybe I should just bid 6H since he will rebid 4H with xxx KJTxxxx xx x or xxxx QJTxxxx x x.

6H

For the record, at the table I bid 6.

For those of you who bid some form of RKC, partner shows 1 or 4. (Obviously 1). What now?

If you ask for the trump Q, responder will afirm and show the K. If you ask for kings and are playing specific kings, partner will show the previously mentioned K.

We can't reliably bid 7 opposite the KQxxxxx + the K. If I knew partner had three spades, or a stiff club, or the Q, or an 8th heart, I'd try it.

Trying.....

3 - 4*

4** - 4N***

5 - ?

4 - Baby RKC

4 - One key + trump Q

4N - 2nd round controls

Now what?

The spoiler shows South's hand, and how this worked out.

][hv=pc=n&s=st53hkq97543dk2c4]133|100[/hv]

We were in 6, making 7.

Two Pairs were in 6, just making.

One Pair was in 7, down 1.

The rest if thw field was in 4 or 5, making 7.

This was a reletively weak field. Those who took only 12 tricks drew trump right away

As I mentioned earlier, I bid 6 immediately. I figured partner had about 6 losers at this vulnerabilty, and I had 4-6 cover cards, depending on how many spades my hand could ruff. A local expert suggested that I should be in 7 if partner is able to show a minor suit K, but then the key is likely to be the ability to ruff spades.

hmm.. ruffing spades might not be enough. Assuming pard will have KQ (reasonable), to make 7 you need pard to have either

- a 3 card residue in the minors with the diamond king OR

- any minor residue with the club king and a club guess

no way you're ever going to find this, even if the system allows for digging up the DK (already far from trivial). It's a guess and in a weak field there's no need to guess 7. That's for a strong field and in need of a top.

I agree, but we should still try for grand in case partner can bid it with the KQ of diamonds, or an eigth heart, or whatever. I'm sure we have enough room to be able to solve this problem, but it doesn't seem worth it for the small gains.
