I'd have responded 1. If you start by concealing a five-card spade suit, it's not particularly surprising to find that you have a problem on the next round.

Responding 1 is great for getting your spades into the picture, but it creates problems when there is no spade fit. Unless you are planning to show a limit raise on the second round by jumping to 3, your 2 bid on the second round is going to sound like a preference on a doubleton.

There is a lot to be said for just making the direct raise to 2.

If playing constructive raises it is an easy 2. If not, then the hand is certainly at the very top end of a 2 raise. You could miss a game but I think 1 followed by 3 is too much, especially at matchpoints.

On the second round it depends on agreements. In this kind of situation I think opener should double with honour third and a non-minimum as it will seldom be right to defend 3 undoubled. Even if 3 making is theoretically par, other tables will let you down. Given that partner could not double, I don't really want to defend so I would bid 3.

3 Kings 10 points, xx in with a vulnerable and perhaps balanced 1 opening !!

And u don't wanna try to suggest a penalty? U want to work for 140 instead of 200?

Wow what a bad defender u are...

Riiiiiiiiigght, because we count points for shortness/length when on defense, especially in the opponent's suit.

Comfortable having not responded 1S.

2H was not "constructive".

Bidding 3H now, but not as comfortable.

Won't be first time I got it wrong.

Yes, it is possible each side has exactly 8 tricks.

Oh, well...going for +140 vs plus 100, or minus 100 vs minus 110..nah, they aint doubling.

Responding 1 doesn't necessarily mean you have to jump to 3 on the next round. Partner won't always rebid two of a minor, and if he raises or rebids notrumps I'm very well placed. If he does rebid 2, my hand becomes worth 3, so arguably the slow route has improved our accuracy. In an uncontested auction, the only real downside is if he bids 2, when a simple 2 preference leaves our third trump unshown, but even then we get something back from having shown the spades.

The main gain is when LHO bids, as opponents tend to do. In a competitive auction, I'd far rather bid 1 followed by 3 than 2 followed by a guess.
