thebiker
Hi I would be interested to know how other players counter a Multi Landy 2D bid (normally showing a 6 card major) after they have opened 1NT (weak) What are the best ways (your way) of using an immediate double and a delayed double? (a) 1NT (2D) X? or(b) 1NT (2D) Pass (2Ma) P P X? © 1NT (2D) P 2NT 3Ma P X? thank you in advance for your answers regardsBrian Keable (alias "thebiker")
Zelandakh
There are several options. Here are a few:- 1) "stolen bid": X = Stayman; bidding is natural or follows your leb/rub pattern if you play that; delayed double is typically t/o2) "multi defence": play your usual multi defence, eg (Dixon) X = values or v strong; 2M = weak t/o of other major; others natural3) "defensive double": X shows an interest in defending and sets up pen doubles; others are natural; for Stayman, pass first and then cue There are other possibilities. I think for most American pairs (who do not meet multi often) option 1 is the simplest. Essentially it is simply a agreement to play your normal defence but to substitute double for the cue and use a delayed double for the take-out hand that would have doubled if they had shown their suit immediately.
mfa1010
a) Direct X is strong, typically balanced. Initiates penalty doubles. (Note: 1NT-2♦-X-p-p-2Ma-p-p is forcing on 1NT-opener).b) Delayed X is takeout with competitive strength. Opener should not pass the double very often in this sequence. JLOGIC
The good players that I know seem to like X=transfer, systems on, 3C=stayman. I'm sure pass then double would be t/o. Personally I like to play X as MFA said, creates a force through 2N and doubles after that are penalty (hands with a 4 card major usually start this way). 2M natural, 3C+ transfer leb, 2N leb. Free
The weakest point of multi is that only 1 person knows which suit he's bidding. Usually people bid constructively over a weak NT, so we might as well take advantage of the fact that we're probably in a part score battle or on defense. Therefore I like the following:Dbl = values, interest in penalizing2M = natural, NF2NT = both minors, weak (attempt to hide their suit)3X = natural, signoff (attempt to hide their suit) Passing first is used to let them show their suit. After that, we play our usual system like the auction went 1NT-(2M).
frank0
If you play in US, the easiest way to counter multi 2D overcall is to call director and says"This is not allowed, it's general-chart event!" This is what happened last time I use the convention in NABC open event. :(

All subsequent doubles are now for penalty. Having accepted that. (b) X= take-out. ♥
mtvesuvius
I generally prefer to play what Jlall said, using the full NT structure except that 3♣ becomes stayman. Later doubles are takeout, and delayed lebensohl should also apply IMO.
Gerben42
I play our meta-agreement. 1st Dbl shows values (at least some game interest), 2nd Dbl is T/O, after that they are in trouble. A direct 2NT shows minors, direct 3 of a minor is invitational.
whereagles
I usually defend a multi 2♦ over 1NT the same way I defend an opening multi. Seems to work fine.
