jjbrr
At work I have to use Firefox, IE, and Chrome regularly to make sure our website stuff displays correctly. At home I use Firefox exclusively. IE9 is awful.
barmar
Is this poll primarily for Windows users? You didn't list Safari, which I expect is the most common browser among Mac users. I use Chrome for sites that don't work well in Safari. For instance, BBO has had problems since the 5.1 upgrade a couple of weeks ago. Phil
I hate Internet Exploder. (apologies to the Microsoft folks involved in BBO :)) I used to use Firefox, but my add-ons have become unyielding, and crash reports are more comment. Chrome is my browser du jour - stable and quick.
helene_t
for some reason we use chrome at work. I suppose it has some advantages considering that all our internal comm and much of our documents/spreadsheets are in the google cloud. on my old computer at home I used chrome because it runs smoothly on a 500Mb stoneage thing, but since I got a new computer I use firefox which is better for bbo. my phone has gecko but I almost never use it. IE is fine for accessing microsoft mail but then again if you are a windows user you might as well use outlook. other than that IE sucks but I don't think it is available for ubuntu anyway. of course for most purposes it makes little difference which browser you use. chrome has a nice plugin for "the onion" but in general firefox has better plug-ins. awm
As a Google employee I feel obligated to use Chrome (no, they don't actually make me). Annoyingly, BBO now has problems in both Chrome and Safari. I suppose I should download and install Firefox or something but I am lazy and don't feel like installing a browser just to run BBO. kenberg
For a while I had both Chrome and Firefox on my old Windows XP. The two browsers seemed to feel that there wasn't room for both of them on the computer. I can't recall the details, but eventually I dumped Chrome and kept Firefox. Now why Firefox? If there are things that a. it doesn't do and b. Chrome (or Opera) does do and c. I actually want to do, I don't know what they are. And Firefox is everywhere. We have three computers, all with Firefox. When I am over at the University, Firefox. If I want to use the computer at they Y, it has Firefox. So I use Firefox. As to the IQ thing, this seems like a study in need of a purpose. The result could largely be anticipated. Let's suppose that, say, Opera has features that are useful for people working in IT. So they use it. The guy who bags my groceries probably, like me, can't imagine any use for these features, so he uses IE or Firefox. Probably the average IT guy has a higher IQ than the average grocery bagger. (We will slide quietly past the issue of where I fit into this hierarchy) Voila, mystery solved. Or perhaps switching to Opera would raise my IQ.

awm
There is some self-selection in this survey, because IQ scores are based on people who voluntarily took an online IQ test. I've never felt any desire to take an online IQ test, and most people I know are the same way. I suspect that there is some set of people who have high IQs and also like to brag/show off about how smart they are. Maybe these people also want to use a browser that most people don't use/have never heard of because it is a way to show off how much "better" they are than everyone else?

awm
i have not had troubles using BBO with chrome, what kind of problems are you guys talking about? In Chrome, when I try typing a message to someone on BBO, the keyboard "skips" keys. It is much worse if I am at a table where cards are being played quickly. Probably if I typed a lot slower it wouldn't be an issue. The problem with Safari (recent, this didn't use to happen) is that the mouse disappears when moved over the playing area. This makes it hard to click on cards and is generally annoying.
helene_t
Lynx.If Opera users have an IQ of 120 then Lynx must be 140. But of course real geeks don't use a browser at all, they just type the http elements.
gordontd
There has been a study about IQ and browser usage here:See the paperThis clearly demonstrates that five years of IE use makes you more stupid (especially using the older versions), while five years of Opera use makes you more intelligent  We've used Opera to display the results at the bridge club for more than five years, so hopefully all the members have got the benefit of that. kenberg
Speaking of browsers and BBO: For the spoken commentary on the Spingold I ended up using IE on the XP. First I started to just use the downloadable BBO, then remembered that I had to use the online version. So I tried, from Firefox. I had trouble getting the voices. So I logged out and re-logged in with IE, or tried to. IE said I needed Flash, Flash said I could download, but, when I tried to download, it told me that currently Flash won't work with 64 bit technology. So the hell with it, downstairs to use the seven year old XP. Stuff that works, stuff that holds up, the kind of stuff you don't hang on the wall. The live audio was a really good show.
