The Misadventures of Rex and Jay #5778

As you long time fans know, Rex and I are seldom on the same book when we bid, much less on the same page. We missed a simple slam as follows:[hv=pc=n&s=s9hajdk73cajt5432&n=sakqt2hk5d984ckq9&d=e&v=0&b=14&a=p1c1d1sp2cp2d2h2np3cp5cppp]266|200[/hv]

1 could be as few as 2, 2 was game force, 2NT showed a non minimum hand with stoppers in the red suits. I couldn't believe Rex didnt bid 6 clubs with his monster. He felt my 5 was strongly uninterested in slam, that I should cue bid at the 3 level or bid 4 which would be stronger. I thought 5 painted a perfect picture of my hand.

I like 2Nt since i want to grab Nt to suggest a pos stopper in D. Over 3C however i like my hand a lot having 7C is quite rare here.

There is 2 reason partner bid 3C

1 he think 6C is possible

2- He thinks 3Nt might not be the best game and want to keep 4S/5C in the picture (because hes short in D or H).

5C simply make no sense then.

I prefer 3C to 2NT. You can always continue with 3NT over partner's 3S bid. 2NT is somewhat discouraging for club contracts. From N's perspective you could be off 2 A's.

IMO, 3C is a slam try not anything else. Partner already asked and you said NT. Why should he ask again after you gave your opinion? If you agree, then clearly you should bid 6 with your hand.

Agree with everybody that South is mostly to blame.

South has already suggested no-trump as a contract, so his 5 should be a mild slam-try. Exactly what it shows depends on agreement but perhaps something like

x Qx KQx AJxxxxx: good clubs but no convenient first round control.

Nevertheless, when minor-suit slams are in the frame, bidding space is at a premium. IMO, over North's 3 exploration, South's leap to 5, with his actual slam-suitable hand, is profligate and stultifying.

2NT is debatable, 5 is insane. NEVER bid 5m when aprtner makes a slam try and its unlimitted. and I mean NEVER. Because more often than you think he has a big monster that all that needs to do is keycard before bidding grand.

EDIT: I forgot to say, considering you hand with 7 card suit, a side ace, a protected K and club intermediates given that you have already put yourself in a 11-14 context as a dead minimum is one of the worse judgement decisions I've seen from an experienced player.

Would it be OK if 5C specifically denied any keycards as well as showing a bad hand? :)
