Flem72
I've been made aware in the last few weeks -- funny how these hands tend to manifest in clusters -- that I do not really know what I'm doing with high level preempts. I've seriously misled partners and achieved alarmingly poor results. Though I've looked around for resources, I've not found anything really convincing. So I'm asking opinions: What are exemplar 4M and 5m openers (assume no namyats) at different colors and in different seats? And if someone does know of an authoritive, take-it-to-the-bank book or other resource, hit me. Thanks in advance, Regards and Happy Trails, Scott NeedhamBoulder, Colorado, USA
semeai
Maybe it would be helpful if you posted a few of the hands. If not the whole hand, then yours plus what went wrong.
pooltuna
it is simple. your trick expectation has to be in line with the colors. so if you are Xed V vs NV you need to be sure you are taking 8.5 tricks for a 4M call. since this is relatively rare you don't see good players making wild preemptive calls at these colors
whereagles
Read chapter 3 of this: http://www.bridge.is/files/Partnership%20Bidding%20at%20Bridge_2054397795.pdf
semeai
Read chapter 3 of this: http://www.bridge.is..._2054397795.pdf I was going to recommend this too, but then I looked and there was no discussion of 4-level preempts. That said, it's still a good read and may address some of OP's issues.
Flem72
Read chapter 3 of this: http://www.bridge.is/files/Partnership%20Bidding%20at%20Bridge_2054397795.pdf You know, I've read this thing twice, but I tended to concentrate on the competitive raise structures to the exclusion of the opening preempts stuff. Thanks for reminding me. Regards and Happy Trails, Scott NeedhamBoulder, Colorado, USA
whereagles
I was going to recommend this too, but then I looked and there was no discussion of 4-level preempts. That said, it's still a good read and may address some of OP's issues. While it doesn't discuss those higher level preempts, the main principles and guidelines are all there. Ever since I read that chapter, my number of -800s vs nothing has gone down from "frequent" to "virtually non-existant" :)
