Best hand I'd picked up in a while, and partner tried to spoil it.

For better or worse, you have agreed to play a "free-wheeling" weak 2 style with Ogust responses to 2NT. New suits are F1. A direct jump to 4C would be a keycard ask. What is your plan?

If you bid 2NT, partner will bid 3D (good suit, bad hand). If you bid 2S, partner will bid 3D. If you bid 4C, partner will bid 4S (1 key + trump Q).

Bonus upvote to the first person to correctly identify who said it, and in what movie.

I'll start with 2... No idea how I'd gonna find the information I need, but it can't hurt to try. Over 3 I am painfully tempted to rebid 3N, but I guess I'll try 4 (or 4) to keycard now. After that I'll probably punt 6N. Edited by mtvesuvius

It's obvious that partner can't have a good "hand" but may a have good "suit"

If he has A K Q .... his reply to 2NT! ( Ogust ) will be 3NT!

If he has 2 of the top 3 honors, he will reply "good suit " .

You can't bid 6NT, because you won't be able to get to dummy if the suit isn't running.

So, with either of the 2 replies above, I'll bid 6D .

Even if partner showed the A K Q... you don't know about the J.

All of the above but if I find the AKQ, I'll punt 7nt for either good luck (ie. the J), a squeeze or a really good pseudo one.

Okay, seems like 2S is the popular option, which was my choice at the table. After partner's 3D rebid, what is your plan for finding out trump quality? Is it possible to cater to x/xxx/AJ9xxx/xxx (when 3NT looks best), or xx/Qx/KQJ9xx/xxx (6NT), or the various permutations where 6D makes, etc. Is it just a guess whether to try for slam or not, or do you think the odds favor it? It would really suck to get past 3NT and find partner with xx/QJx/QJ9xxxx/xx. mtvesuvius mentioned his temptation to bid 3NT, which was my (agonized) choice at the table. Afterwards I found myself wishing that I had more tightly defined Ogust responses available, i.e. "a good suit is one that can reasonable expect to play for one loser opposite a small doubleton" or something like that, rather than just the "2 of the top 3 honors" that I would have assumed (but wasn't discussed). Anybody have better working definitions of good/bad hand and suit?

Over 3 I would probably bid 4NT. Will stop short of slam if pard has no keys, else trust him to have some diamond strength and bid 6. Opposite

x

xxx

KQJxxx

xxx

6 is pretty ok, but 6NT rather hopeless.

As to better oogust responses, sorry mine suck as much as yours :)

The full hand:

+490 was decent but obviously 6D is where you want to be. At the table, I thought 2S was pretty clear, but then I felt I'd endplayed myself into being unable to find out enough about partner's diamond holding. Pretty pessimistic I suppose. At least if I'd started with 2NT, I would have felt better after partner showed a good suit, but slam would still be pretty bad opposite AQ9xxx, there would STILL be room for pessimism.

I'll bid 4 and if partner shows up with AK of diamonds, I'll bid 7NT. If he shows up with KQ of diamonds, I'll bid 6. Checking the spoiler, I see he's got AQ of diamonds. I'll try 6NT at matchpoints, 6 at IMPs. He could easily have J, xx with spades 3-3 or Q

It seems like 6NT doesn't make against a good defense, but hey... maybe I'll get a lucky lead or something.

It makes against, good (normal) defense. Do you see why?

And double dummy declarer play will make it against double dummy defense.

This took me a bit of time. Extremely mild spoiler:

This problem would be easier if you found it in a book than here as a randomly dealt hand.

I'm assuming you mean you get a good lead (like a club) and so you play 4 clubs, and 3 spades getting the bad news on the 3rd spade. So then you finesse a diamond, play the A and exit with a diamond forcing him to break the heart suit letting you make your J.

However, I'd be interested to see you make the contract against the lead of 6.

It was Earnest Borgnine's character (Cabbie, the cab driver) in Escape from New York.

Edit - Upon actually looking this up, it seems that both the Cabbie and the President said this.

diamond finesse at trick 1, 3 rounds of clubs, Ace of spades, low spade. South is forced to win, and must either give you another diamond finesse or lead away from the heart queen.
