Here is Board 11 of a 28 board match. This hand followed the previous disaster described in ATB #1.

Assign the blame for this fiasco.

This is basically all on West, who is too weak and doesn't even have the excuse of short diamonds.

East might have gone slower, but there are no obvious ways to stop below slam.

I find the West hand call of 4 to be essentially a preempt over a preempt and it suffered as a result. Basically I am saying that West is screwed into passing with his hand or if he makes a call he will be promising a lot of values he doesnt have, at least in a lot of bidding systems.

I was East on this hand.

I don't disagree that I made an overbid by bidding 6, but even with the hand that my partner had for her bid, if you just add the 10 6 would have a small amount of play (2-2 spades, K onside, Q onside exactly third). And I think everyone is in agreement that her hand is not nearly good enough to bid 4.

I certainly expected a better hand for her 4 bid, in which case 6 would be reasonable. Something like KQ97x Axxxx x Kx would have been nice.

Follow up questions:

(1) What do you think is the minimum for a 4 bid?

(2) What do you suggest doing with the East hand opposite a 4 bid?

The minimum is something like KQxxxx KQJxx x x IMO. It is not a matter of HCP, but a matter of shape and suit qualities. The advance should be quite natural after 3D 4D, cause you have to play 4H/S as to play. After 3C 4C, it is better to play transfers IMO, which allow you to set up trumps and try slams later.

I was East on this hand.

West is showing at least solid opening bid values with good majors, by that measure he is an Ace short for his bid, I think the shape is fine.

East is good enough to make a slam try, but not a lot of room to do so. 4 will surely produce a plus score, but seems tame. My choice, 5, far from ideal perhaps but given the pre-emptive effect of the previous bids its the best I can do.

I have some sympathy for West, whose side might be shut out if he doesn't bid over the preempt (pard is likely to have a 3325, with which he could hardly find a bid over 3). Not that this stops 4 from being a slight overbid. Which might have worked wonders in another setting, mind you.

6 is full-tilt. Agree the hand is too good to bid a mere 4, but a straight shot at slam is out of order.

Still, the preempt did a pretty good job of derailing E/W.

Remembering that ArtK78 made several posts to announce that this match would be on Vugraph, I looked up this board from the BBO Vugraph archive. As it happens the answer to the ATB was there.

After the previous board finished, while waiting for this board to begin, the BBO operator typed:

"Goecker tells Korth to be quiet, as he is resulting the last board."

100% East.
